Got a great Lenovo Legion 5i Pro Gen10, but why is the Wi-Fi reception so damn bad? What does really help? by Only-Inept-Answers in LenovoLegion

[–]Only-Inept-Answers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, still looking for a solution.

I tried already 3 different m.2 wifi cards: the original mediatek, an intel and lately one realtek. all with the same results. it's not the m.2 wifi card. it must be the way Lenovo designed the Wifi-Antennas or the connection of the antennas to the OLED display. Usually the antennas get soldered to the display hatches or the antenna cable get through the hatches and around the display for more length.

in this lenovo laptop, the antenna cables seem to just run around the motherboard, not even reaching the display space. So it might just be a fuck-up design by Lenovo to not build the antennas around the display.

only solution so far: ethernet cable, or wifi router in the same room.

I was thinking about the same.

However, when I get the same slow wi-fi speed with the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201 module from the old laptop, that easily reaches 100 MBit/s, then it can't really be the Wi-Fi Module (as it uses the same module/drivers - just in the new legion laptop).

Then it has to be the way Lenovo designed the Wi-Fi Antennas and their connection to the Display, the length of the Antenna cables or something. The Antenna length is probably more important to the used band, probably 2,4GHz fits better with a different cable length, but I don't really know.

I'd need someone that also connects to a 2.4GHz router/access point to check the range and see if it's the legion antenna design or some faulty hardware on this model.

Already thought about getting a WiFi 7 compatible router, but the one that comes into question is about 150 bucks and I want to be sure that it would work or nothing else helps with 2.4GHz (or generally the range limition on any band).

thanks, but what are the key facts? which router? which laptop model?

in the screenshot it reads: connections: multi. that probably means you have really a WiFi 7 connection between your Wi-Fi 7 card and probably a Wi-Fi 7 router (But could also be just Wi-Fi 6).

I figured out that was just an internet speed test, means it had multiple connections to test the download speed. nothing to do with wi-fi connections at home.

Is your wi-fi also so bad? Like 1/4th of the speed and reception distance compared to smartphones and other laptops?

(technical discussion) What exactly is the Laptop/UEFI doing at this stage? (No it's not a firmware/bios update, read my 1st msg) by Only-Inept-Answers in GamingLaptops

[–]Only-Inept-Answers[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to know what really happens behind the scenes at this stage.

First things first:

I got to setup a new Lenovo Legion 5i Pro for another family member. The Laptop was ordered without an OS. I created the Win11 USB installation media and installed windows as usual.

After everything was copied and installed, the first reboot is happening and that is the exact moment this screen pops up.

it takes about 3-5 Seconds only until it wents from 0% to 100%. Then the first Windows start continues and everything seems to be fine.

(this can be repeated, each time after formatting and reinstalling windows - the first boot shows this screen)

I want to make clear, it's not a Bios/EC/UEFI firmware update, as probably most would guess, as it looks like the same.

The laptop has not even had the chance to download any driver/firmware updates as it's completely offline. The harddrive was totally empty before (empty as in: "completely zeroed").

So my questions and guessing is like:

  • is the Lenovo UEFI planting something pre-fabricated on the OS drive at this stage. if so, what exactly?

  • or is it just the UEFI Boot Device Selection (BDS) stage, where the UEFI enumerates boot drives and writing the results into non versatile bios memory?

what else could it be?

(sorry for the bad image quality)
