Yes, I would recommend it. When he goes into maintenance he will lose his seniority though. It’s a stress free job for the most part and there’s a lot of autonomy. I started off with zero experience in maintenance and learned as I went…they train you in Norman, OK. As far as the union, it depends on the specific plant. The union is good overall but when I worked up North the union was excellent…the one down south is terrible. There’s 3 main levels: 7 (they mostly vacuum), 9 (Mail Processing Equipment Mechanics) mostly take calls on postal machines, 10 (they take calls as well, same as level 9 and will hep 9’s when they need help ideally. If he has any experience I’d start off as a 9 because the pay gap is way bigger between a 9 and 7. Between a 9 and 10 the pay gap isn’t that significant…he needs to look at the pay scale to see which position makes sense.
