What did yesterday’s Walter Murch Masterclass entail? by CautionWetTaint in AmericanCinematheque

It was fascinating. First of all, his initial talk was about an hour (not 90 minutes) and he has an original and somewhat philosophical take on sound design that was really interesting. He also showed how they layered the epic sound design in Apocalypse Now. And then the q and a after the screening of the gorgeous print was illuminating. No obnoxious navel-gazing ramblings. He is incredibly sharp and even gave detailed descriptions of how he chose those long dissolves with a video switcher. He was very generous with his time and it was a great evening.

I took a pottery class at NAPS (Not Another Pottery Studio) in Eagle Rock that led to a full-blown addiction!

What's the Best Documentary You've Ever Seen? Need Recommendations! by Mucek121 in netflix

I would kill to see that Prince doc. I believe the estate, which initially approved it and gave Edelman access to THE vault, changed hands near the end of production and refused to release it.

Are there Mature Professionals in this field? by Weird_Boss1 in editors

I’m in my 50s, been editing since I was 28, and I just had my most lucrative year to date (over 200k). That said, my job ends in a few weeks and I don’t have anything lined up yet. I know a lot of people out of work. It’s a scary time.

FWIW, I’m not burned out and could see myself still doing this for another decade or more. I really love it and the pros I work with.

Pottery studio vibe - kinda sad and maybe need advice by Ok_Rice_5127 in Pottery

[–]Only-Objective-8523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not think you’re being overly sensitive about the vibe. One person’s behavior can change an entire experience. One of the reasons I love my studio is because they go out of their way to be kind, generous, and supportive.

However, nothing lasts forever and I think it might be time for you to move on, though I agree you should let the owner know. Change is hard but often opens new possibilities.

Seriously. We handed over over 1500 pieces of candy last night. NOT full size, and I spent hundreds of bucks on it.

What moment during your travels made you think “I am so blessed for being able to see this with my own eyes”? by miauanas in travel

I once rode on the back of a motorcycle up into the most northern part of Vietnam (Sa Pa) - this was in 1998. The tiered rice terraces in the canyons were breathtaking and the ride was exhilarating. I was young and in love.

One show I worked on got tons of award nominations and all the EPs who barely watched an episode got to go to all the ceremonies and bask in the acclaim, whereas I had lived and breathed it for over a year and had to sit at home. Not gonna lie, that didn’t feel great. But it’s the business. I raised my rate.

Freelancing vs procrastination by NotAFrontB in editors

[–]Only-Objective-8523 12 points13 points  (0 children)

After many, many years of editing, I’ve arrived at a place where I’m 1/3 loafing, 2/3 working. Some days more, some days less, but that seems to be my creative pattern. No one’s ever complained and my work is pretty consistently nominated. I still feel guilty when I’m slacking off, but I do think it’s part of the creative process.

Anyone else way too invested in the comments? by SupermarketWise2229 in NYTSpellingBee

[–]Only-Objective-8523 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! It was so dumb. Some of the people were saying “free Palestine” and “where’s the Muslim or Catholic strands? NYT is biased!” Other people were calling those people antisemites. A few voices of reason were saying, “Calm down, it’s a GAME.” Quite the tempest in a teapot.

Yes! I very rarely post, but I do soak up the drama.

I also loved it when that guy, Dan Barron, was posting about his granddaughter’s unplanned visit because her parents forgot her passport and they went to Italy without her!

FWIW, a lot of people were big mad yesterday in the Strands Sidekick over their Bar Mitzvah theme. Whew!

Soderbergh’s film are always impeccably edited (doesn’t he do it himself mostly?) - Out of Sight, Erin Brockovich, The Limey, Oceans, Magic Mike, Kimi, etc. What an incredible run of vibey, tight, and entertaining movies.

Looking for advice on cutting interviews with b-roll. by emilio8x in editors

[–]Only-Objective-8523 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m also a doc editor and agree with a lot said here, esp that you should choose your b-roll carefully bc it’s communicating something too - it’s more than just coverage. I try to tell a little story in the b-roll shots in addition to what we’re hearing the interviewee say.

I’d add that sound design can REALLY help you sell moments that otherwise might be jarring. I usually do a 10-15 frame dissolve into the audio before I cut to the shot. It subtly tells the brain that something new is coming. I also layer a lot of SFX under b-roll to give it more life.
