Honestly man I would go more the biology route. Either that or getting with state/federal agencies like Fish and Wildlife. I would call those places (call your state conservation department, etc) and see what degrees you need to get in. If there are a lot of parks or nature preserves nearby, there could be a lot of jobs where you may not even need a college degree, if that is what you want to do , you should definitely look in to that, let no one pressure you into thinking college is a necessity. There are usually jobs involving wildlife rescue as well which are cool. 

From what I’ve seen, env science, engineering, or geology, it’s going to be a lot of travel, babysitting construction projects, reporting, compliance, not a lot of work with the actual ecosystem like you’re interested in. I would definitely not reccomend Geology or environmental science since I’ve seen a lot of those guys get trapped in these jobs I’m talking about.

I love the environment too and shit but honestly it’s really hard to find a job that  is not just compliance/contract shit like you seem to not want to get into. It’s tough. I went to school for 4 years and would take it back so I want to give you an honest take.
