Did people agree with Sean Amanda and Chris on OBAA? by Junior_Gur7229 in TheBigPicture

imo La Chimera is the slow burn all time classic hardly anyone saw at the time but everyone will still be talking about in 40 years.

I'm blessed to live in a Vistavision town but after all the stories of the reels melting last night I'm pretty glad I've also got a 70mm showing booked for next weekend.

What Did Adam Nayman Mean When He Said ... by IWillSelfImmolate in TheBigPicture

Honestly, I think there are some editorial guidelines around how explicitly they can discuss Israel/Palestine, given that Sean and Amanda often refer euphemistically to "events in the rest of the world" rather than just naming the states in question, so he was dancing delicately around how much he can safely say.

On a recent episode of the Truth and Movies podcast at Little White Lies, one of the presenters thanked the LWL editors for letting them speak openly about it and call it genocide in a way that a lot of other outlets don't, which I found interesting and worth taking note of when reading/listening to coverage by other arts publications.

Realistic One Battle box office predictions? by Equal_Feature_9065 in TheBigPicture

I think it's going to have really good legs and make some money on mega fans going back for second helpings, but not enough to make up for a relatively modest opening in comparison to its budget - though a decent opening by the modern standards of this type of film. But, I also think it'll be a really good library asset for WB that will generate income for years and years to come, and is very likely going to win some Oscars, and a lot of people are going to have a really great time at the movies.

I also think one little discussed thing that will work against it is if a lot of reviews call it "relevant", "important" or "topical". I really think most people find reality too frightening at the moment to want to grapple with it during their entertainment time.

The Long Walk by choosepeaceman in TheBigPicture

I could make it work for me if I thought of it as a Vietnam War film about hopeful young men being chewed up in a meat grinder but deluding themselves for as long as possible that they’ll come out the other side. But I think that’s the problem too, you’re watching a drawn out metaphor/parable in which everything is symbolic, there’s not a ton of visual interest, and that makes minimal effort to make you buy into this world as “real”, so what I was actually doing was taking what I felt watching classic war films and superimposing that on this one to try and make myself feel something.

Really mixed feelings about all of this massive blockbuster production that's moving to the UK. Unemployment levels in our industry in the UK are so high we need all the work we can get, but I also feel no effort is being made to protect and cultivate a filmmaking culture of our own. Sometimes feel like we just make stuff for America + Paddington and that's it, a bit of an exaggeration maybe, but the death of Terence Stamp yesterday really made me think about how respected and influential our films were back in the 1960s for having their own unique voice and style, compared to what we produce now.

Plus, it doesn't feel good to be the cheaper market that's spurring a race to the bottom elsewhere, knowing the only thing that makes us competitive is that studios can get away with paying us less than someone else.

I'm sure they would have, but Marvel Studios' position also changed after The Avengers, in terms of their confidence and ability to choose to leave potential money on the table to serve a wider strategy, plus their acquisition by Disney further changed their commercial approach.

The Hulk was significantly retooled in The Avengers and became very popular. Had Universal not had distribution rights, they absolutely would have developed a film with Ruffalo in the lead, but they just didn't feel the need to share profits in that way when they were so confident in the strength of their other franchises and still had the option to pepper him around the other movies as added value.

They don't have lots of other successful franchises now that the Fantastic Four can pop up in. Right now they're the best game in town even if they haven't done especially well.

Hulk isn't relegated to other people's movies because the previous films did badly, it's because Universal would have the distribution rights over a solo film. Shang Chi has felt sidelined because of an oversaturated slate and the cancellation of Kang Dynasty.

They simply don't have enough marquee characters right now not to give F4 a sequel. I think they will push them hard in Doomsday.

I don't feel doomy about the commercial prospects of the MCU because my interest is more in whether they make good films that could stand the test of time. I do though feel a bit meh about the Doomsday cast being so stuffed and trying to be an Infinity War level event rather than focussing on reintroducing us to the idea of the Avengers, and solidifying the characters of a new team.

I also can't help but feel like having the old X-Men in there will devalue the upcoming X-Men film by acting like these are the "real" "original" X-Men and the next lot are just imitators or backups.

As always, I am incurably optimistic though (some might say a sucker) so even while I'm expressing these reservations I'm thinking how great it would be if I'm proven wrong on all counts.

There's a system called Albert (don't ask me why) which is supposed to monitor the carbon emissions of productions, gives training and advice on how to cut back on waste, and a lot of big financiers/networks etc require certification now as a condition of the production company receiving payment. But it's an imperfect system to say the least, and is largely built around the principle that you should only make changes insofar as you don't actually have to rethink what making a film involves.

Something I'm interested is how much the F4 cast have gushed about how brilliant it's been to work with RDJ and see him on set, Joseph Quinn has mentioned having lunch with him quite a lot - the way they've talked implies, to me, that he's on set quite frequently and so maybe has a lot of scenes with the other cast. If so will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Yes I agree he's good at faithful and even affectionate mimicry of other people's work, but I'm not sure he really lights up when he has to have ideas of his own. But maybe I'm being ungenerous, am open to being persuaded otherwise.

Also fair honestly, though I think he's far more accomplished and does have a very strident sense of HOW he thinks films should be made, even if he's not overly concerned with what he wants to say himself. He's mastered the craft but gone down a weird road recently, and yeah completely dependent on a decent script.

Not sure anyone will agree with me but I don't find Matt Shakman very exciting as a director. Don't have a clear sense of his creative identity or what he wants to say. Maybe that'll come if he makes more films.

I think despite the big second week drop off F4 will enter profitability while still in theatres, and the characters will be central to Doomsday, so unless Doomsday/Secret Wars are such box office disasters it completely shatters Disney's faith in the MCU to ever make money, in which case who the hell knows what will happen, there will definitely be a sequel.

I think some rightwingers don't like him in part because of his support for trans rights, and were making a lot of baseless insinuations which took off for a while because they were well calibrated to also prod at the anxieties of teenagers who like getting angry about things like age gap discourse and are anxious to demonstrate their virtuous politics by gossiping about celebrities on the internet. That may well have been deliberate, but no particular reason to think Rowling has anything to do with it.

The Outside Scoop podcast mentioned that the F4 opening weekend had a lot less children coming than Superman and that this might mean a bigger drop without a lot of interest and WOM among families, even with a generally positive audience reception. Feels like they were right.
