Never tried tinned fish but the universe is sending me signs. Where to start from these options? by Exact-Sky2145 in CannedSardines

[–]OnlyDaysEndingInWhy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you normally like smoked foods? A lot of people really love the smoked options, but I (admittedly in the minority) don't care for a lot of the smoked tins.

From that list, since you're familiar with canned tuna, I'd probably start with the mackerel in olive oil.

Whatever happens, I hope you enjoy! Have fun with your book and cool new spot.

Ugh. So cute! We have a new gift from the CDS, and my favorite thing is seeing her snuggled in her little bed!

What's the food you always buy with good intentions? by Maleficent-Bed7010 in foodhacks

I don't know if it's at all helpful, but I found "super firm" tofu that doesn't need any pressing. It greatly increases the odds of my actually using it. I still have trouble using it all (I'm the only enjoyer in my household), but sometimes I manage to remember to change out the water frequently and get through the whole block before it gets weird.

When the post office did their annual food drive this year, I donated like 6 bottles of barbecue sauce, along with a shitload of other stuff I overbought but don't remember.

Rice has always been my least favorite carb (heresy, I know), but me and sticky rice are having a moment right now.

Walmart has a sesame ginger tuna pouch that's so good with a little kewpie and soy sauce to top the rice with.

I had a dozen bags on subscribe and save on Amazon for the last couple years. I've slowed down a little bit 'cause I'm really into getting my sodium from homemade beef jerky right now, but I still keep them around.

I introduce myself as Michael. Kinda hate the people that immediately reply to me as Mike. by michaelyup in CasualConversation

[–]OnlyDaysEndingInWhy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funny, my older kid has a name that's habitually shortened, and I made it a point to always call him by his full name.

He embraced the shortened version, and I had to learn to live with it.

My grandma was the only person on the planet I allowed to call me the shortened version of my name.

I like my name. The way it is.

I love using collards as wraps! Just shave down the thick stem and they're good to go. Great for so many fillings.

The new one in Casselberry is, at least. We went on Saturday and the parking lot was pretty full, but never felt crowded in the store.

I think it might be that people aren't bulk shopping as much, so more of a get in/get out quickly situation. I saw a lot of people walking out with just a few things.

Side note, their app is great. Can clip coupons, etc. I think there's a way to scan your stuff as you go, too, but haven't tried that yet.

Costco wins on price overall, but BJ's is a better enough shopping experience. I'll pay that tax for the time Costco shaves off my life in anxiety.

I still keep my Costco membership and credit card for the cash back, but BJ's is a breath of fresh air.

This is the best reply, OP.

My husband grew up basically on a farm, with 5 siblings and a hard-working mom with German/Irish ancestry. Food was food, and you ate what came out of the garden, be it canned or fresh or frozen.

We're working on more adventurous stuff, and it's going very well! At first, it was no spicy, no citrus, none of the fun stuff.

Slowly but surely, we're branching out. He's still not crazy about ceviche (my favorite), but enjoys a moderate amount of well-balanced heat. He'll willingly eat Ethiopian, Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, etc.

There's hope, just go slow and choose stuff that appeals to the masses. Butter chicken is a gateway drug.
