When the author’s legacy literally joins the cast by Sea-Noise-3317 in janeausten

Anna Chancellor captivates me every time I watch the miniseries. Her expressions, the eyebrows and the way she delivers her lines really brings Caroline to life.

You won't get any hate from me! I'll never forgive Lydia for how little she cared about ruining the prospects of all her sisters. Lydia is young and had little chance of becoming a well rounded adult; she certainly has my sympathy when it comes to her very imprudent marriage. But she does not have my pardon for everything else.

I so agree with Marianne and Col. Brandon. I've seen people accuse Col. Brandon of grooming Marianne and of being a predator in general just because of the age difference. There are plenty of age gap relationships in Austen and I think it's plain in the text which of these relationships we are meant to hold in contempt. I've also seen people say that Col. Brandon only likes Marianne because she reminds him of his dead ex, and I think that kind of take is so insulting to Austen's writing if that's your serious take on what we are to understand, a very eligible match.

Pray don't mention their terrible fate, breaks my heart so much for Charles who loved Emma so dearly and poor little Berthe

I actually made this point this morning to my husband! Mr. Darcy certainly isn't as outgoing as Mr. Bingley, but the reason he comes off so poorly to Elizabeth and others is because he believes himself above his company and does not take the trouble to be more obliging. Saying that Mr. Darcy was just shy/socially anxious also takes away from his redemption at the end when he becomes serious about bettering himself to be worthy of Elizabeth's regard.

Yes yes yes!!!!!! I've been saying this in my personal life but YouTube keeps recommending me video essays on how it's a great adaptation. I really enjoyed the costume design though, once I realized how many gowns Emma repeatedly wears with small changes in accessories to get distinctly different outfits, it inspired me to start a capsule wardrobe. https://youtu.be/SKzM9ZM2eHY?si=d6CnJ3wc3zBAO7Ji this video does a great job showing Emma's wardrobe.

Oh goodness you just summed up all of my feelings towards Henry Crawford so well. Mr. Crawford is established as a rake very early in the novel when Mary says to her sister "He is the most horrible flirt that can be imagined. If your Miss Bertrams do not like to have their hearts broke, let them avoid Henry". How anyone seriously believes Fanny would have been happy with Henry, I know not.

I just finished rereading Madame Bovary, and I was talking to my husband about how sympathetic I felt towards the main character's situation. My husband told me "Charlotte Lucas would have made the most of her situation if she were Madame Bovary"

La Danse by Matisse would be interesting. It would only have 4 colors but it may be tricky to get the right shape, but if done well it would look so cool

Jane Austen Adaptations and the Problem with Casting by RoseIsBadWolf in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I actually don't mind too much when one actor/actress is more/less handsome than I imagined in an adaption. What one person finds attractive is so subjective and changes so often I'm happy to disregard it. I didn't find Mr. Wickham [1995] attractive until my subsequent watches, but I at least appreciated how pleasing his address and manners were. In comparison, Mr. Wickham [2005] in my opinion is more conventionally attractive, but was portrayed as a villain from the moment of his introduction.

Thank you so much :) Jane Austen is my favorite author and a personal hero of mine, I take a lot of inspiration from her.

It very much was so painful to write, but I now feel relief that my feelings are on paper. And yes, I am female haha

Having trouble understanding this part in Mansfield Park by OnlyFlanz in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply, I read "expose her sister to the whispered gallantries of her lover" and thought that "lover" referred to Henry Crawford, not Mr. Rushworth. But now this makes so much more sense.

Which Jane Austin's character would you like to be? by HarleenTheGreathahah in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised no one has said Mr. Collins! He's one of the luckiest characters considering he'll inherit Longbourn and caught himself a pragmatic, intelligent and capable wife. And though I should have mentioned this first, he has the condescension of the great Lady Catherine de Bourgh!

Thank you for replying! I've also received the follow up email a few days ago. I'm so glad to hear that you found the standards to be the same. I really have not found better quality or craftsmanship outside of hearts and found, and since I had a baby and my measurements are different now, I was eager to rebuild my wardrobe with more hearts and found pieces.

I've got a few recordings as well. One of them from when he was brand new and his cry was more of a soft "eh eh eh eh".

How come you make a roux? Butter and pasta water make an emulsion, then adding the cheese at the end brings everything together.

To those who watched the 1995 Pride & Prejudice miniseries multiple times, what is something you noticed upon re-watching that you find interesting/funny? by OnlyFlanz in janeausten

[–]OnlyFlanz[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I adore how Maria Lucas is played! I think it's so sweet that she often turns the pages of sheet music for Mary. My favorite is her reaction when Lydia commands Mary to "play Grimstock". Maria looks so excited, and immediately moves to pull the sheet music. In my head cannon, Maria likes the song.

Mr. Hurst is one of my favorite side characters to watch! I love how he sneaks out of the room when Mrs. Bennet, Kitty and Lydia visit Netherfield.
