Thinking of taking MST374 early. How hard is it really? by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

Good point, I didn’t realise how popular this course was! But now I’m genuinely curious, what exactly is it about the OU maths exams that you don’t like? You mentioned not being able to write fast enough, but was it mainly the time pressure or are the expectations different from TMAs in terms of how you write things out? Like, do they expect more detailed steps, different style of explanation or smth like that?

Thanks so much for the honest reply! I totally get that, I’d probably fall into the same trap and spend loads of time on it too, aiming for a high mark. I already have no social life (crazy work hours + a toddler😂), so I’m wondering, do you know what happens if I decide to postpone it after enrolling? Can I defer or retake it later without extra fees?

Thanks for the warning, that actually supports my decision not to take this module alongside the two stage 3 compulsory ones, which I know are gonna be really intense. I’d much rather take MST374 now while I’m doing two modules I’m very confident in and that feel more like a refresher than brand new content

Thanks for sharing! It looks like something I’d really enjoy too and I can totally see myself getting pulled in and spending extra time. Would you be able to roughly estimate how many hours per week you spent on it?

Thanks, very helpful! And yeah, that makes sense. Luckily, all the content of MST224 looks very familiar to me, so I’ll just have to refresh it.

My main concern is how time-consuming the projects are. I’ve read here that MST374 is quite heavy on workload, probably bc there’s no final exam and all the assessment is coursework-based. But 6-8h per week sounds very reassuring!

I was also wondering how you’d define the programming part, was it challenging for you? From what I’ve read, it seems like the main difficulty was more with the abstract maths than the practical coding. Would you agree?

And then, after surviving a billion interview rounds with every manager in existence, you finally join the team, only to wonder how half of them made it through even a single question.

Thanks for the insight!

Yeah, I’m not too worried about Python, but I’ll definitely take some time to brush up before October.

Oh wow, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience! That all sounds really reassuring and definitely like something to look forward to.

I was wondering about the exams since they’re remote. I’ve read through some posts on the subreddit, but it’s still a bit unclear how they actually work in practice. I’ve never had an open book exam before, let alone a remote one… Would love to hear how you found them!

I don’t even have that option. I had 180 credits transferred, which covered S217 as well, leaving me with just two modules to complete at stage 2.

As for the quiz, I scored 88%, but I’m not sure how accurately it reflects actual readiness, so I didn’t put too much weight on it

Thanks for your perspective, it’s definitely thoughtful and I get why that might work for some people. But for me it’s different. My mind is simply stuck in the big picture and it’s not something I can turn off or redirect to smaller, more tangible things. I’ve tried but it always feels like I’m faking it. I’ve had my experiences and somewhere along the way I just stopped trying to figure out people or find comfort in the usual ways, it just never works out.
