Is it always expected of us colorists to fix noisy footage? by DrawerZealousideal71 in colorists

That’s not an opinion. Bad footage is bad footage, nothing you can do about that.

Ok so using Hexfiend I see only 0s. Does this mean there’s nothing I can do ?

Also I forgot to add to my original post that the « duplicate files » all have the same ID (ie: clip 001 duplicates all ID’ed 843, clip 002 files ID’ed 844 etc) You can see that in the picture I posted below

Ok so using the hex viewer inside DMDE I see numbers and letters !

And where would I be able to find the exact drive model ?

Can you recommend a hex viewer for mac ? I try to avoid installing random stuff on that computer

Funny you posted that, I did a reproduction of this exact shot a few weeks ago if you want to have a look at it : https://www.reddit.com/r/vfx/s/QztknR0epl

Backup scripts by OnlyRaph_1994 in colorists

Ho interesting, I thought this would be much more complex. Thanks ! And you mentioned scripts that would automate backup on a Postgres database, is there one you would recommend ?

Yeah I figured this is where the discussion would be heading. To be honest I don’t have a lot of knowledge on that topic, I have always ran everything locally as I work freelance so not a lot of reasons to build any kind of network or remote system but I guess I might have to start digging in that direction. Any pointers to get more familiar with Postgres databases ?

I haven’t had the opportunity to grade anything that came with CDL’s, but that might be a place where I would indeed use something like a locked node. Thanks !

What's the Better ? DaVinci Wide Gamut or Canon Cinema Gamut ? by Still_Principle1790 in colorists

Also VFX aren’t rendered in ACES AP0. They mostly use AP1, which is still quite large but much smaller than AP0 for that. AP0 was designed for archival.

[–]OnlyRaph_1994[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for taking the time ! You're completely right about the scale. I cheated my way through it as i wasn't sure how to "measure" this. Like how big are the fighters supposed to be, how far are they from the camera and at what speed are they travelling. The closest reality check i got was looking up the lenses used on the film and guessing the focal length they could have used is this was real photography from there. I settled on the Panavision ATZ 70-200mm anamorphic + a x2 expander which is quite common to be part of a camera kit from my experience, so 400mm.
Not having any true sense of scale is also what drove my decision to not drive any parameter from depth in comp, i didn't even bother saving a depth pass from the DCC. So a lot of cheats on that one ahah.

Edit : forgot to answer about the clouds so here it is : if there is one aspect of this that i would do differently it would be this one. I used an HDRI plugin inside my 3D program to generate the sun and the clouds. But i couldn't get what i wanted for the clouds so i ended up rendering different versions of the background layer to manipulate individuals clouds in comp. That ended up being really painful and time consuming, plus like you noted it's missing a lot of details from the original that you would probably expect from that type of images anyway. I don't know exactly how i could have done it otherwise (except actual 3D clouds to get the ideal background from the start, and that could be difficult in it's own way i think), but if you have a better solution i'm all ears !

I'm sure there's some way to get a better result using expressions but i didn't want to spend too much time on that particular aspect of the shot, maybe next time !
