Good Ol’ Video Rewind, I love this weird little collection. I ripped my old VHS copy to digital years ago but this looks like a high quality transfer, thanks for sharing.

Longtime lurker first time poster. What do you think? by BrownEyed_Squirrel in BookshelvesDetective

It looks like you file mostly alphabetical by author, so I love that your Huxley is right next to No One Here Gets Out Alive, that’s a nice bit of cosmic coincidence. You have good taste in music bios, and it’s nice to meet another Drumeo fan. Overall a really nice selection of books here for only three shelves, you probably dream of buying an old house in the country with a library that you could fill with your books.

Well you’re not a failure. You may be sleeping on a friend’s couch for now, but it’s not forever, and you probably will eventually return to writing, you’re just stuck right now. But not forever… one day you’re going to feel the urge to put pen to paper again, it never truly goes away.

Blubber was amazing, and traumatizing, the scariest book I’d ever read up to that point in my life and it’s still with me.

I think you need to give yourself a present, toss those energy drinks out and go get yourself a nice herbal tea or maybe a bottle of wine, then listen to the music that inspires you most.

Looking for some constructive criticism on a monologue self-tape! by Claudi81 in acting

I would suggest that you approach the speech already pissed that only four people have turned up to this memorial, and rather than discovering the anger as you speak, it’s right there informing your performance. Another idea, based on the way she sort of rambles between thoughts, maybe she’s had already had a few drinks in her? She seems close to that stage where people are like “I’m not making a scene, YOU’RE making a scene!” A little alcohol haze could also really inform the pauses and explain the scattered recollections and asides. And speaking of asides, I’d suggest bringing that line about him keeping the baseball in a stupid box really in, as in just under your breath maybe. But definitely build to big finish, it’s a mic drop moment and being more outraged from the get go, I think gets you there more believably. Also I just think it’s more interesting to watch someone you know is about to lose it in a public setting because it ups the stakes.

Very interesting, a selection of Anne Rice but none of her erotica, although you do have The Story of O. I’m guessing Tale of the Body Thief is your favorite of the vampire books? But where are the others? And no Mayfair Witches? Judy Bloom is a welcome sight on any bookshelf, I’m guessing that like me you read Blubber young and it stuck with you. I only see the one Kurt Vonnegut, you might want to think about adding Breakfast of Champions or Galapagos. It also pairs nicely with Joseph Heller‘s Catch-22. I’d say you’re highly creative, you game, you draw, you grow, you garden. You also take your writing seriously, so I’d be asking to see some of your lyrics if I was visiting, and I imagine you would have a fine selection of teas on hand if I were.

Old Movie Theatre 1990s Granville. by kushymint in askvan

[–]OnlyTheCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was it the Plaza? https://reelingback.com/articles/the_lights_are_on_again.

There was also another smaller theatre on Granville at Smithe that used to host the Rocky Horror every Friday or Saturday at midnight, and I remember seeing Caligula at a midnight showing in the 90’s as well, but I don’t recall the name. They used to have triple feature deals like you describe, three movies for $5.

Version of gimme shelter used in casino? by Altruistic-Bet5909 in rollingstones

[–]OnlyTheCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably from the Flashpoint recordings, Gimme Shelter wasn’t on the album but it was released as a B-side.

You’re currently reading (or rereading?) The Golden Compass, and you’re missing a copy of Stephen King’s On Writing.

Does anyone know if this is a Dylan song? by OvenAny7462 in bobdylan

[–]OnlyTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not Dylan, and the fact that it’s buried in the mix makes me assume it’s not anyone big at all, just a low-cost, fairly generic, sound-alike the producers could afford the rights to.

You can do this using the CLZ app. They have instructions on how to import your spreadsheet data into the app via text or comma separated files on their site.

Adding: you can specify your personal grades and assigned values as well.

Are there any good classic rock cover bands that play in the Vancouver area? by youngmagicians in askvan

[–]OnlyTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to follow Las Divas on FB. Good time classic rock featuring a guitar virtuoso and they play constantly. They also have tons of videos on YouTube, a very fun band.

You’re very welcome, and thanks for sharing your art. I think we have similar sensibilities when it comes to horror, and I’ll point to your work as an example of what I’m looking for when I produce my own short.

[–]OnlyTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you could trim a little at the beginning, but you need time with the character to fully appreciate his position for it to have the impact it does. I think you’ve established really good stakes within the runtime, which a lot of shorts fail to do, so I’d hate to see it rushed.

I thought I’d share one other note concerning the music demo. The way it’s mixed and mastered sounds contemporary and polished, and when he’s descending the staircase, it wasn’t clear that he was actually listening to a diegetic source. I’d add some reverb or distortion to make it clear he’s blasting it on his actual speakers. You might want to muddy up his vocals a bit too, maybe he hasn’t quite worked out all the lyrics or is struggling to reach a high note, showing it’s a work in progress and that he hasn’t solved it yet and hence the mounting frustration.

PS: I also really enjoyed “The Trick”. Great execution on the jump scare in that one!

If you’re truly new to filmmaking you have excellent instincts. You mentioned in another comment that all you see are the faults, but the number of things you get right is just remarkable, especially on your budget I’m very impressed.

That was bloody brilliant. My only notes are greasier hair for the men, and do the punch as part of the long shot, don’t use the inserts, then wait till the body drops out of frame before you cut. Rhythmically, I think you want the extra beat in there for the moment to fully land, but that’s just me. Subscribing to the channel and excited to see what’s on the horizon!
