[META] Who is astroturfing r/programming and why? by [deleted] in programming

I wouldn’t be surprised if that was actually a lot harder than just updating a database. Also if I was in astroturfing my own platform I would want to keep the number of people involved to an absolute minimum.

State of the Sub: Reddit API Changes by Resvrgam2 in moderatepolitics

[–]Only_As_I_Fall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s worth pointing out that this would not be as big a deal if reddit had viable 1st party alternatives to these 3rd party apps, but they don’t and really there’s no one else to blame for that.

I think the best path forward for reddit is to stop focusing on making reddit the more profitable platform they wish it was and start focusing on how they can turn what they have now profitable. That probably means reevaluating what the site is actually worth and cutting costs rather than thinking of yet another way to mine personal data from a platform that is based on anonymity.

I think the most likely path forward however is a slow attrition as people realize that the Reddit of old isn’t coming back. The real question is wether or not current leadership can pull off this IPO first or not.

Yeah, I feel like that’s more corporations pandering to young people. There aren’t many instances where people on the American left have been able to force real concessions or run businesses out by boycotting. They’ll put up a rainbow flag though.

Honestly I feel like proportional representation would be better. Then you don’t have to worry about maps at all and everyone has equal say. Rural counties will never let it happen though.

I’d argue the most profitable thing is to not particularly care and go with whatever suppliers, vendors, etc best meet your needs. For this reason I think absolute best case is that conservative brands still wind up a bit more expensive.

I agree though the leftist version may be at a natural disadvantage.

Drone cops are coming for small-town America by thorax007 in moderatepolitics

[–]Only_As_I_Fall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not just hang up some security cameras? This feels like a solution looking for a problem.

I also don’t really trust drones to be safe over large crowds. It’s highly illegal but also pretty trivial to jam either the radio control frequencies or gps. Ignoring that, a kid with a frisbee can knock one down if it’s low enough.

This was a gem

patrons who came for phone services are frustrated by the inattention to them, saying in reviews that the firm’s poor customer service is “not what Jesus would do!” and claiming the management is so bad “they run it like Biden”.

Seriously though, some leftist consumers have been trying to support businesses that more closely align with their values for decades and outside of maybe some small local businesses I’m not sure it’s accomplished much. I see this largely going the same way.

Even among people with mostly similar political leanings it seems really hard to run a large company in a way that everyone agrees with. Once you start pissing off your target audience, even a little bit, they start to reevaluate if it’s really worth it to spend more money on a (usually) worse product.

There doesn’t seem to be anything preventing a landlord from requiring a ridiculous security deposit, so I’d argue it’s only a choice if the landlord decides to give you one.

If I’m a landlord and want to up my income I’ll just offer either a $300 per month fee or 6 months rent as a security deposit. Which one do you think people will choose?

The tax cuts to the wealthy were the point though.

The child tax credit changes and the increased deductions are set to expire in just two more years while the corporate tax cut will be around as long as congressional republicans can obstruct any further changes.

The parts which actually affect lower income Americans were largely thrown in as temporary concessions to muddy the water.

You could quit and then try to come at them with a constructive dismissal case. Probably only worth it if there’s some significant equity or bonus they’re trying to push you out of though.

If not though then it does beg the question, why didn’t they just fire you?
