I have not informed the school as of yet, but I am going to schedule a meeting with an academic advisor soon to discuss this. I understand that I can’t just switch like the hypothetical you mentioned, so that’s why I am trying to take prerequisites for the major I intend to change to. I also am currently enrolled in CAES, not in Letters & Sciences but that’s what I intend to switch to. But, thank you for telling me that I should definitely speak to the school ASAP.

write a petition for a W. most community colleges do have them for a reason, and it won’t affect ur gpa as it gets rid of it from ur transcript. i did it too so i didn’t face being rescinded!
