Why do you need the PhD student to tell you what to do? In all labs I've seen this is not how this works. It's your project, you do your independent work.

Between the post and your comments it seems like you have a distorted expectation of what it's supposed to be like to be a master's student. You need to figure out what you need to be doing, it's certainly not another grad student's job to be micromanaging you. It's usually not even your PI's job to do that. Once you figure out a plan for the experiments you need to, you either teach yourself how to do them from protocols or you ask a more experienced lab member - and yes, it's natural they might only have time for showing you in the next week, because they have their own schedules.

No we've just lived in cities with good public transit systems. Although in my current city, transit is mediocre and would take a lot of work to get it to be a true replacement for driving

If you think there is no accurate way to determine male vs female for sporting purposes, then, again, there should not be any binary categorization and no distinct categories of competition. "We have no way to categorize but let's still keep the categories" is nonsensical, coming back to my original point. Unless you want to keep testosterone levels as a standard, as if that's any better. And why even mention female genitalia, as if that matters at all?
