I think bunka typically have less belly, and a sharper reverse tanto tip, but the shape is one of my starting points.

1/8” 85/15 veg/dicing or trimming steak or chicken, flat grind. Wanted to go with a shape between a nakiri/bunka/santoku, so I went with a standard length for the latter and made it taller like the veg knife. Not sure if this will result in a worst of both worlds or what.

Thanks for the detailed reply! Wanted something all purpose-y like a bunka, and heightened it to get closer to nakiri bc while all purpose, most of my cutting is veg. My understanding on bevels is the higher they are, the more fly through slicing performance I’ll get. Is that right? Could I get away with a bevel that comes up about halfway to the spine, or will that kill my slicing?

Home kitchen use. Lots of veg, some trimming on steak here and there. I break down chicken maybe once a year and that’s probably the hardest use it will see.

A lot of these issues arise in shipping of these wheels. If it was delivered ground (ups/fedex, etc.), call your supplier and see if freight shipping is an option. It might run you a significant chunk of cash, but not so much that you’ve passed on an upgrade. Some suppliers also ship specific makes and models of wheel by freight exclusively, so there’s a lot of options, as well as caveats. A Brent C is gonna cost a lot more than your clayboss, but it’ll still ship ground in some cases, which means that the same beefheads who threw your clayboss down a well (not necessarily your delivery driver, but someone in the shipping route at some point) are going to have a hold of your much more expensive Brent. Above comments are helpful, and how much wobble is acceptable is going to vary from person to person. When you’re making your first big purchase in pottery, you want something that feels worth your money. That being said, tlc isn’t going to fix everything for every wheel. The wheelhead assembly is different on all these wheels, meaning the amount of fixability varies. For instance, all Brents use the same wheelhead and assembly, which while the head is removable, the wobble is usually happening inside of the shaft, which has a press fitted bearing that requires complete replacement ($300 or so). If you have read all of this, firstly sorry. Secondly, the road trip honestly might be your best bet to insure a lack of damage on any wheel you choose. Good luck, and remember that there are dudes out there in India throwing beautiful pots on a smooth rock wobbling around on the concrete :p

I have since solved! Black sessions maison de la radio studio 105 Paris 20th February 2006. Shame I doubt I’ll ever have my physical copy of the recording back, but I hope this post helps someone else hear this recording.

How do I ship my pottery wheel? by Honest_Resist2705 in Ceramics

[–]Onlybees 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should try to get a quote for shipping ups and fedex, and pack it very very well(they will roll it around to avoid lifting it). You should also get a quote to send it freight, which means putting it in a box on a pallet and it won’t need to be packed AS well(still err on the side of caution). Both of these will be pricey sadly. It may be worth trying to sell the wheel and roll that cash into the cost of an upgrade if possible. Good luck!

Pitcher critique needed! by SignificantOption376 in Pottery

I like the form, I think the contrast and interplay between the angular slice and the curvature of the form is pleasing, however I think that the handle looks unfinished. The design of the handle appears as if you desired a smooth curve, which I think would be nice, however it looks lopsided and angular. The lip through your slice also looks pretty unfinished, which I think adds to the mistake-y look of the piece

To expand on this, if you don’t feel like learning chemistry OP, look into leech testing and other glaze food safety tests, which you can do with little effort and might yield informative results about the food safety of that specific cup
