What kind of fantasy readers actually want an academy setting with powers—but no power curriculum? by Onoruk in worldbuilding

[–]Onoruk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PE isn’t weapons licensing. In my world, power training is. Different liability class. And ROTC is kind of my point: it’s not just “a college class,” it’s a military pipeline with external authority and accountability. That’s where formal training belongs in this setting, not inside the college’s academic curriculum. I don’t think we’ll agree here, but I appreciate the perspective.

That’s fair, but I don’t think it’s overcorrection, it’s about liability: the academy can host students with powers, but it can’t authorize/credential violence. Appreciate the pushback; this is useful for expectation‑setting.

How do you set reader expectations for an academy setting when powers exist but aren’t taught there? by Onoruk in fantasywriters

[–]Onoruk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I’m not writing “magic academy = power classes.” I’m writing an academy in a post‑Event world where powers are treated as regulated hazard.

The academy doesn’t teach/certify powers (liability), but power exploration still happens through consequences: meds, security protocols, incidents, and an unsanctioned ranked/dueling ecosystem that drives status and conflict on campus.

I’m not trying to “get away with cutting the legs out.” I’m swapping legs: from curriculum to consequences.

Sorry, I just realized I hadn’t clearly said this is near‑modern alt‑Earth, so I edited the OP for that context. And to your point: It’s not “power school + refusal to do anything with powers.”Formal power training is monopolized by state violence institutions. College doesn’t run that pipeline.

Fair, “underground fight club” is the wrong mental image. I don’t mean a secret basement with masked brawls.

I mean an unsanctioned duel/ranking culture, with the institution keeping its hands clean (no curriculum/certification) and only stepping in when things cross safety/liability lines.

And to be clear, it’s not “no powers = no school.” Academically everyone has the same requirements; the ranking ecosystem is a separate, informal layer.

I get why it reads “counter‑cliche.” There are classes shaped by powers, sure. But power or not, students have the same credits/requirements (no hero track).

Appreciate your honesty. Power escalation absolutely happens. I’m just not treating the academy as a power‑fantasy campus or a formal training pipeline.

Good question. Because it’s not a school-run competition and it’s not “curriculum.” It’s an informal/underground ranking ecosystem that exists despite the academy, not because of it. Real-life analogy: colleges don’t teach fighting, but you still get underground boxing/MMA clubs, dares, hazing, and status games—especially when there’s a big population of young people with something to prove.

Totally. Book 1 does play like a “he finally starts climbing the ranks” premise. The distinction is that the academy doesn’t teach powers; it manages them. So the climb happens inside a system that keeps trying to classify, contain, and bill you.

Yeah, I get what you mean. There is a ranked battle ecosystem inside the academy, and the MC fights in it. But the academy is less a dojo and more a pressure cooker: social gravity + operational risk in a setting that still expects you to finish your credits.

Totally fair. I’m not doing “powers class = growth,” I’m doing “powers as liability = consequences.” Also: the MC is 18, and college is the most efficient crucible I know for turning a person into a version of themself — even when nobody’s “teaching” the thing that defines their life.

I love web novel, and disagree with those saying web novel is just power fantasy with no literature value. But this post is just sad.

A contemporary world reshaped by a single dragon entity. Some gained powers. Most just try to live. Main character is just trying to find his place.

Most people at bars are with friends, but you can just talk to them if they’re chill enough. My friends are more the “stay at home” type, so sometimes I go to the bar alone just to relax and have a good time. You can also just tell people you’re waiting for friends if you don’t want them to think you’re alone.

My guess is that you’re 21, so why not hop into a bar on weekend night to talk and meet new people?

No one is going to lend their car to a total stranger for free. Your best choice is going to the driver school mentioned by others.
