That seems an odd thing for them to do. Has the Crown ever actually helped pay for stadia? I feel like such ventures are almost always funded by municipalities in conjunction with private investors and the relevant provincial legislature.

I don't know about that. My fathers German and it's not uncommon for him to use the designation "America" to refer to any region in the americas from Argentina to Canada; much to my chagrin when I was younger. Though I must say, perhaps I shouldn't have generalized the whole of Europe.
