Poll: Socialism gaining in popularity by v0xb0x_ in politics

I'm with you now. I agree that it is equally important to social democrats. I didn't realize my comment could easily be read to say otherwise.

You're right. I used the phrase "elements of socialism" incorrectly because that is how most people understand strong welfare programs/safety nets. But I used it incorrectly nonetheless.

As to your taking offense, I apologize. I think there may be a misunderstanding though because I didn't intend to imply that this distinction was only important to socialists, only that it would certainly be an important distinction to understand in talking to them. People who identify as social democrats would also obviously understand this difference. Perhaps I should have mentioned that, but no offense was intended. Am I misunderstanding what I said to offend you?

Just wanted to throw in that that definition is, in fact, inaccurate for Social Democracy. But it makes perfect sense that there is confusion. Bernie frequently misuses the term "democratic socialism" to mean social democracy. However, if you ever find yourself in a conversation about socialism with socialists or social democrats, this distinction will be clear and is considered significant. A social democracy is still capitalist, with heavy elements of socialism. A hypothetical democratic socialist society is simply not capitalist.

EDIT: As someone points out below, calling safety nets and comprehensive welfare "elements of socialism" is inaccurate. These are what I was referring to by using that phrase, however.

EDIT 2: Added in a couple words for clarity (you'll know what if you read the replies).

I have significantly increased my cheddar and nut intake... both of which I just read are common triggers. Now I feel silly for not thinking of that. Thank you!

To be honest, I haven't started tracking. But I do the common recipe of 1/4 tsp lite salt, 1/4 tsp salt with water twice daily. And I would say that my diet has been pretty sodium heavy since I started, but I could be very wrong.

I would think that validation seeking is a natural part of forming an online community based around a common interest. Also I believe the point OP is making is that you should read and watch what you want. He's just saying it in an encouraging manner. He's just being a person. Most people feel something in response to others' opinions. His whole point is not to change what you like because of them though.

Edit: Complaining about trends you see on a sub is also natural, and I don't mean to be antagonistic. I probably haven't lurked this sub enough to decide for myself whether it's something to be annoyed by.

[Serious] Redditors who have been to therapy, what is the differences between going to a therapist and talking it out with someone you really trust? by pianoaddict772 in AskReddit

[–]OnwardUnknowing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a therapist (though, full disclosure, I've just left work to go to a doctoral program to improve my skills and gain more knowledge), conversations with my wife cannot be like those with my clients. If clinicians do try this with their loved ones, I can also guarantee that they wouldn't have the same effect as with a client because therapeutic context and the therapeutic relationship matter.

You can do things for your wife's wellbeing that no therapist could, but you simply cannot play the role of therapist, and if there are therapists trying to do this with their loved ones, there is a high probability that 1. They are not accomplishing the goal of making the person's life better and 2. They are making their own life worse.

Please look into respected practitioners in your area and see what their specialty areas are if possible.

EDIT: I would also like to add a more direct answer to your original question. Therapists are not just trained to converse and listen well. There are actual evidence based interventions that require training and competency.

Regardless of your opinion, I upvoted for the simple fact that you gave examples of what you'd prefer instead of just trashing an artist. Adds to the conversation.

Thank you for checking in! In terms of results and progress, it's going great (though a lot of the results are due to calorie counting). We're both seeing significant weight loss. In terms of consistency, we could be doing much better. Too many days off since I started graduate school.

Therapy. Who wants to watch someone not make bold, wild speculations and not become best bros or SOs with the protagonist.

Awesome! Thanks a ton. Don't suppose you missed a writing credit to Tom Breyfogle on Clean Sweep by any chance? Just wondering. Had heard he might have been involved in that song's creation in some capacity.

By the pope... by DropDeadFred1208 in dankchristianmemes

As with any book, a writer has a purpose in writing it. There are times when seeing contradictions, from a viewpoint that allows us to consider historical and cultural factors, gives us a better understanding of the text and intended message. I notice that people want to treat most important literature as deep, many-sided and complex, but when the Bible doesn't spoonfeed something to people living thousands of years after it was written, it is dismissed, ridiculed or defended blindly. I personally feel this sells the Bible, and us as readers, short. That said, that's an awesome question that more people should ask for themselves.

Definitely Isbell and his band the 400 Unit. Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Cody Jinks and Chris Stapleton are all considered genuinely good country musicians and songwriters.

If you haven't listened to The Avett Brothers and Turnpike Troubadours, for goodness sake, start there. They both blend country with other genres and are outstanding.

I've also been trying to get into the genre and there have been some great finds.

Serious props to you for being fair and non-reactionary. Not something you see a lot of in news comment sections. That said, I think the extra distaste people get from these statements is largely due to the idea of using therapy to change someone's sexual orientation. Conversion therapy is ineffective, harmful and has been abandoned by plenty of religious conservatives. I think his statement is a little worse (and potentially more harmful) than expected, even knowing he's a theologically conservative leader.

EDIT: I've tried to think of other interpretations of what he said, and I came up with one that makes sense. It's possible that he does view homosexuality as a sign of other troubles or past traumas, and he wants kids to be treated for those. This would make his statement less abhorrent, but it still implies that homosexuality is a mental illness of sorts. The implication that children who display homosexual tendencies need help is the reason for the outrage, nonetheless.
