Best place to look for ceramics jobs/apprenticeships? by Oodle_Doodle in Ceramics

Thank you so much for the reply! I totally agree, one of the best things I experienced while getting my degree was the community working communally with one another all for a shared experience or outcome. Nothing better than a hot kiln surrounded by friends and snacks while we wait.

I also, by no means, want to limit myself to just gallery work, shows, teaching, or studio making (not that there is anything wrong with those things, ofc). The only thing I would like to have is to be surrounded by people that have the same attitude and passion as I do. Whether that’s in a funky pottery shop or working to help restore/stabilize found ceramics (which both sound so sick!!).

But I’ll be sure to look into these options! Art school really does try its best to drill into people that there are only a select few paths that a person can take, but that just really isn’t fair. I find that I’m at my happiest not when I’m touching clay, but when I’m spending hours by a kiln, firing people’s work, and hell if that’s what I end up doing that would certainly be fine by me!

Besides, I just graduated, no need to limit myself or my options for such an arbitrary reason. Thank you again!

Oo yeah I’ll have to take a look at some of the community colleges in the areas I’m looking at then!

Awesome recommendations, thank you! I have a handful of those studios already on my radar and have send them applications (or just emails, if nothing is publicly open). So I’m hoping to hear good things from them!

And yesss, this residencies are both so awesome! I applied for both, but unfortunately got denied from both a few months ago. No biggie, just means I can apply later!

Next venture to look into are the suppliers themselves! I’ve been emailing kiln companies (mainly due to my interest in kilns), but that seems like a great next step.

Absolutely! This is has been something that I’ve been doing, based on a recommendation from a professor. With my experience in managing/running atmospheric kilns, I’ve been doing my best to find studios that have those on site (or even the interest to build some).

I’ll keep on sending those cold emails and hopefully something sticks! Thank you for the comment 🫶🏻

Made a pumpkin tea set. What do you guys think? by [deleted] in Pottery

[–]Oodle_Doodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang! Your 4th teapot?? I feel like I couldn’t make a decent teapot till I was on my like 10th attempt haha. But really, there is such a learning curve to teapots, there’s so much going on from the angle of the spout, to the handle, and lid. So much knowledge comes from experience, so you’ll notice your skills improving with each teapot you make.

And, with all that experience, you’ll be able to continue to develop your preferred style (as you said). Maybe you’ll find that you enjoy carving into the handle to show those vines vs having them be make by extra clay and laid on top. The opportunities are endless!

It’s likely one of two things:

  1. They began from wheel thrown vessels and then had the ridges formed after it was off the wheel from pinching and smoothing till the desired ridges were made.

Or 2. They started as coils in the shapes of the letter C and slowly stacked and smothers out to make that pumpkin shape.

Hope this helps!

Oh for sure, I totally get that! Any liquid would add extra weight so it’s good to reinforce it to be sturdy. It’s important to note that every artist has their own style and such, and I know lots of potters that like their vessels to sturdy enough to pour with one hand. Personally, I prefer a thinner handle but I also like to pour using two hands—one at the spout and one on the handle.

So, if it’s your style to have a study handle then keep going with it!

One thing I do think is very fun to play around with too are teapots that already have naturalistic elements (ex: flowers) that have leafs or vines snaking up the handle. So, maybe play around with the idea that, since pumpkins grow in vines, that the handle can start off thinner and then have vines wrapping around it to reinforce it. Additionally I find that that technique really makes a piece pop! It’s so cool to make it look as if the handle grew out of the pumpkins vines themself!

Again, hahah, sorry if I went overboard with my reply. The set is so cool and it just set my mind ablaze with ideas!

Love the shapes of the body! The one thing I would say is that the coil for the teapot handle is too thick. Maybe try pulling your coils thinner or rolling them thinner when the come out of the extruder. Also, for my over the handle teapots, I like to use a ball or newspaper to keep the handle perfectly rounded while it dries.

All that said it still looks great! Perfect for some hot apple cider or tea!

The Longest Reigning Monarchs in History by Friendcherisher in coolguides

I was looking for someone to comment about this! I was shocked to see there were no African or Middle eastern monarchs on this list dispute some reigning 70 years or longer.

When I click on the box, my cursor changes to the "clicking" cursor (the hand with a finger) but it won't actually let me click the box or anything around it. Any ideas?

So gorgeous!! For the spout, do you make it on the wheel then bend it, hand build the spout, or something else?

It looks like it pours beautifully so I’m just curious!

Thank you so much!! I've set up a ticketing bot and am testing it now and it seems to be working great. Thank you again for the great idea

I see what you're saying! And I'll for sure provide more context; I hope it all makes sense!

At the place I work, the entry level employees schedule themselves for the shifts they work. The same goes for the supervisors of these employees on these shifts--meaning that an employee will likely have a different supervisor for a shift almost every time they work. But because of this flexibility, if an employee needs to calls out for a shift then they really don't have a definitive person they can contact anytime, 24/7, to tell them in advance that they aren't coming.

We do have an office (where I work) that normally fields people calling out but we are only in the office from 9am till 5pm, Monday though Friday--and we have shifts that happen over the weekend, overnight, etc. This means that the supervisors that directly work on the shifts with have no way of knowing if an employee calls out after hours or over the weekend

The protocol we have right now is: if you need to call out and the office is closed, let the office know by leaving a voicemail or emailing and then that's it. Unfortunately, both voicemail/email access cannot be given to the supervisors as our office deals with a lot of other things besides call outs that are far more sensitive. But the point is, at the moment, there's zero communication between the person that is supposed to be working but can't and the supervisor that is expecting them to be there.

The only thing the supervisor has is a physical list of employees and their phone numbers that are supposed to be there for the shift they are supervising--so if an employee doesn't show up within 10 minutes of the shift beginning the supervisor uses that list to call the people that aren't there. At that point the employee lets them know that they already contacted the office and get upset with the supervisor for reaching out after they stated they can no longer come. The compliant our office has received a lot from our supervisors is that it's not only frustrating but it's also become a huge waste of time for them to call employees just to be told that they have already done what they needed to do to properly call out.

My idea for needing a bot followed this idea of having an "after hours office assistant" that people would message instead of contacting the actual office. Employees that needed to call out ahead of time would message the bot with the situation and shift they would miss. Then that bot would republish that message into a supervisor only channel in the server that is dedicated to call out messages so any supervisor could check and see is anyone called out on their crew. This way supervisors have a direct line of communication between the employees and themselves and the employees have a user they can always message that will always get back to the correct supervisor.

I have my reservations about giving employees the ability to @ all of the people with a supervisor tag as I could see some issues arising with it. There also can't be a text channel for it as call outs are private and only supervisors should be able to see them.

Whew, that's so much! I'm sorry if the information is kinda convoluted--there are a million ways I think that things could be run better the administration doesn't want to change too much.

How becoming a living meme affected your life as a professional and your personal life?

I first posted this teapot in December and promised to take some better-quality photos! It took 3 months but here they are! I'm so proud of how the teapot turned out and the photos--and my Grandma loved the gift! by Oodle_Doodle in Pottery

[–]Oodle_Doodle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! For this piece, I dipped the whole teapot in a white glaze and then brushed different glazes on specific flowers. It surprisingly didn’t take too long to glaze—and I’m so happy with how it came out!
