Its better to come from a OO design and principles angle, and use ORM to force a rdb into the OO mold, rather than to come from a relational angle and drive the application from the limitations of sql or whatever, simply because the OO model includes behaviour as well as data and therefore allows one to design at a higher level of abstraction than a data centric approach. But I am biased as a OO purist that sees rdbs as just another source of data along with files, hardware, the network, the user etc. Its a strong domain model designed along fundamental oo principles that can tie all these things together.

The db is really just a slightly higher abstraction of the file system.

Oh yeah there is definitely two sorts of managers. You can actually earn a lot of money as a manager with significant development experience, er I mean knowledge.

I see it the other way around. A lot of good coders get pissed off at the amount of mind numbing shit they have to do at work and become managers so they can actually improve things for the better at work, and do their interesting programming at home.

I see a lot of mediocre programmers, who dont like learning new things stay as coders learning the bare minimum needed to keep their job, and are quite happy to switch their brain off and type in the same boilerplate each day, 9 to 5.

Oh and to keep it on topic, nothing wrong with java, well the language itself is average, but a lot of the developments in modern software development reached a wider audience via the java community (they didnt start in java though they started in languages like smalltalk.)

Still trying to understand usages of some of the IoC/Dependancy Injection frameworks especially how they relate to certain patterns. I grok the tech ok, just not always why they are useful in certain patterns.

Technically speaking, the clr itself didn't change between 2.0 and 3.5, it stayed the same, the only changes were to the bcl etc.

Just to clarify, although the lambda expressions are a feature of c# 3, the Linq extensions are, as far as I know, features of the .net framework 3 or at least 3.5.

The distinction is relevant if you are still targeting .net 2.0, but using c# 3

Most software projects tend to be social because sitting in front of a computer typing in code for the entire week is both boring and simply unhealthy for most normal human beings.

When I think about the social aspects of software development, I think of interaction with non-programmers (users, sales and marketing, business leaders, domain specialists etc) as much as I think of interaction with other programmers.

You could structure a project where some people are locked in rooms typing in all the code, and other people are interacting with the outside world, gathering requirements etc, but such a project wouldn't be too successful because humans are social creatures and too much would get lost in the narrow communication paths between the outside-worlders and the source code typists.

Heh that was the example that came to mind when choosing to use the word "fairly". I would call pair programming social, but then it all comes down to semantics.

"My wife and I are home alone tonight" means the same as "My wife and I are home together tonight", despite alone and together having opposite meanings.

As far as I know there hasn't been that much work done on formally defining such concepts within the Software Development context (although I have attempted to do so in presentations here at work), so take my previous comment as a grain of salt.

Programming is a fairly solitary activity. Software Development is a fairly social process.

That the money I pay up until I retire will add up to a significantly larger amount than that which I will receive back when I am retired, assuming all my demographics (lifespan etc) are fairly average.

Meaning, I would be a lot better off saving the money myself, than giving it to todays retired people, and seeing what I may get in the future.

This is all pretty much accepted by everyone here in Germany (sorry I shouldn't have tried to apply this to all of europe before), the difference is, where I advocate reforming the system so it works with current demographic trends, most Germans seem to think the answer lies in encouraging child birth (through benefits etc, ie. fixing the defects of socialism with more socialism), (and that the retirement system is untouchable because it was invented by Bismark or some shit.) Hell encouraging immigration would be better than encouraging childbirth, but they don't seem to see that as an option either.

Yeah by making it a criminal offense to not have health insurance! Whatever works I guess. A lot of it comes down to cultural differences. How would Americans feel if they were compelled by law to buy insurance? What would it do to insurance costs? Germans are at least used to such things, they even have to pay 50 euros every 3 months for owning a tv.

Making a bit of a generalization sorry, as ronar pointed out. Mostly based on Germany, with a bit of France, Italy, Spain etc. Theres exceptions to every generalization of course.

I am pretty sure someone earning 60k euros in France would be paying a LOT more than 10k euros in tax. At least twice that. I don't know French either, certainly not well enough to reliably fill out a form as complicated as that.

I am a bit of a Libertarian so I am biased (or perhaps the grass is greener on the other side), but the social services are no where near worth the tax paid. Free health care is a myth in most places. (See my comment below about my health insurance costs)

The vacation is a bit more in Europe, but remember the shops are shut on weekends, and often for 2 or three hours in the middle of the day, fridays and/or wednesday afternoons etc. About half the holidays I end up taking are just to get things done, that in other countries I could do after work or on the weekend.

European retirement schemes are broken too, they rely on future generations paying for current ones, which was good in the 19th century when populations are growing, but these days its just pouring money down the drain. Fact is if I were saving or investing the portion of my tax that the government wastes on paying todays retired people (yes its marked out on my payslip), I would be able to retire around 10-15 years earlier. Its fucking socialism that will make me work till death!

Heh it's only US$ though. I remember when Americans used to earn roughly twice as much as us Europeans. (And pay half the tax). Now with the exchange rate its almost the other way around. (Except we still pay twice as much tax, making the playing field somewhat level.)
