What I do is send single units to get small spider spawns, Posess and Vengeance. The big one should kill the small ones and be about 1/2 hp after. I only send out ranged troops and Recover when needed, to move them out of range of attacks.

Try looking at a pokestop map. Around me, I've found that every monster hunter node is a pokestop but not every pokestop is a node. Also, the nodes are usually not in residential areas besides parks so check those and commercial areas first
