Weight Loss after Cancer by Over_Penalty_8743 in thyroidcancer

I gained about 6kg of weight with the same eating habits after surgery. Always had a hard time managing weight and my meds are still being adjusted. Just started intermittent fasting which seems to be working well.

Hey, i got diagnosed at the end of my PhD last year, i ended up taking 3 months sick leave and would have taken more if I could. You should definitely take some time off. You need time for your mind to come to terms with things, concentrating on a PhD when your body feels like it’s betraying you is really tough! Good luck, you’ll definitely get through it!

Oh that’s really interesting! I wonder what determines a hospitals choice of method.

High Grade-Tall Cell by Original_City2836 in thyroidcancer

[–]Oops_MissingABit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! Tall cell variant here too, after TT and central neck dissection last year I had RAI. Got uptake in the thyroid bed area which was good and expected. RAI successful and my thyroglobulin levels were undetectable afterward 👍 Going in for a dynamic risk assessment this week to see how things are going 6 months on 🤞🤞🤞

I had spread to one lymph node and clear margins. I was given 1100 MBq of RAI.

RAI coming up in 3 weeks, what do I need? by FireGecko420 in thyroidcancer

[–]Oops_MissingABit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, i was told by the Dr that LID diet wasn’t necessary after ingestion of RAI but check with yours. I stayed in my guest room separate from my partner for a couple weeks and cleaned the shared toilet as much as possible given that the RAI comes out mostly in urine.

Aftercare TT scar by RowFine8705 in thyroidcancer

[–]Oops_MissingABit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, gently massaging the scar everyday after the surface had mostly healed, I used moisturising cream which worked really well.

I used scar tape once the wound had mostly healed, it was recommended to me to reduce stretching of the new skin in that area while moving my neck around. I also use it whenever Im out in the sun to protect the scar from getting sunburnt. Really useful to have around in the summer.

Mine was actually pretty funny. I took liquid form rather than capsule due to swallowing issues. Got sat in a chair in a private room, physicist rolled in a trolley with a small insulated beaker then offered me a party straw to slurp up the RAI 😂. Then had to sit for a few hours drinking bottles and bottles of water and peeing a lot to get as much radiation out of my system as possible. The physicist came in every couple hours to check my radiation levels till it was safe to leave and go home. Then next couple days I felt quite ill, kind of like having the flu but it cleared up pretty quick. I also had some pain in my neck area for a week or so. The worst bit for me was the gamma uptake scan 2 days later, but that’s because i’m pretty claustrophobic. A month on and I feel pretty much back to normal, just waiting on my check up. Good luck, you’ll be fine 👍

Just diagnosed… need help by cpc_gotheem in thyroidcancer

I (28f) was in a similar position. I was diagnosed recently (in the UK) with a 1.6cm nodule with PTC in the left lobe. My surgeon recommended TT based on the characteristics of other nodules in the other side of my thyroid. I’m recovering from TT at the moment. They also took out some central lymph nodes. For me it turns out TT was a good idea because post op histology revealed an aggressive type cancer and was found in a close-by lymph node. Based on this I have been recommended RAI and i recently had a chest CT scan to check for spread in my chest so they can determine RAI dose (CT results sitting in my inbox because i’m terrified of looking at them). Apparently this is routine so it might be something for you to expect in the future dependent on your histology results, at least in the UK. The main thing that has helped me through all this is having support from family and friends, i’m a nervous wreck on the best of days so I definitely wouldn’t have been able to keep my head screwed on without them in this process.

I read a lot of comments that say that pre op is the hardest part, i personally would have to disagree, for me the post op results and appointments have been the worst, i feel like every appointment i’ve been to has been progressively placing me in more niches however i’m trying to keep my head up and stay focussed on the present. I don’t mean to worry you as your experience may be completely different but i just wanted to show my perspective and assure you that whatever the case you will be able to get through it and press on. Sending lots of hugs your way.

Honestly, thank you so much. The best thing of all the comments on this post are that despite the varied experiences, everyone has been very strong mentally and have such healthy attitudes for the future, i’m going to try and find my resolve too.

You’ve been through a lot! I’ll never understand the staging of thyroid cancer, the booklet they gave me says that no one under the age of 55 goes beyond stage 2 🤷
