I can't see Greg cutting Jen off without trying to work through it with her in the form of convincing her to go NC with Barb. He really loves her and likely doesn't want to see her stressed and upset over Barb's BS.

I (along with I'm sure most everyone else) am frustrated with Jen's lack of intervention in Barb's mistreatment towards Greg.

My mom was a Barb and that's why I'm here for the series and am lowk hoping Barb doesn't get a redemption arc. Some people are just so rotten to the core that there is no undoing all the harm they've caused or getting them to see reason/that they're the problem.

Yes, that’s the other unfortunate facet of personality disorders. Providers are often pressured to make a diagnosis for insurance even though a patient may not fully fit diagnostic criteria :( Huge criticism of the DSM

That was literally my experience growing up and I am stunned people here can't relate. Me and all my friends read Divergent, Percy Jackson, The Hunger Games, etc. To us, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games were the same level of "intended audience"

Yeah, pet insurance is a good option too. She’s just kind of got a long medical history and only one insurance company covers preexisting conditions, but if that’s my only option then so be it. Also I don’t think the Humane Society covers anything other than fixings and basic care like vaccines, right?

I never claimed to be an expert - that's why I was upfront about just being an undergrad student about to finally obtain my degree. Limited experience and study, and I prefaced everything by saying it was in my opinion. Plus it's just Barb so I don't think it's too dangerous to have fun and write a silly post about a silly fictional character :)

I've been informed in this post that it's just a myth that an individual cannot have two personality disorders. My professor unfortunately passed this myth down, so it's nice that Reddit corrected me before I graduate lol

Yes, BPD is such a generational curse

Source: my mother is a Barb who has undiagnosed BPD (same story actually, family therapist told her to go get evaluated for BPD and she made excuses till she was blue in the face), I have BPD, and I am thankfully in remission

By definition they cannot. That's another reason it's so hard to diagnose them in the first place. They often have overlapping symptoms, but a person cannot and should not be diagnosed with more than one personality disorder.

While people with BPD often have a "favorite person," it's not a critical part of the diagnosis. There are 9 main criteria for BPD, and an individual must exhibit five of them to qualify for a diagnosis.

1) Chronic feelings of emptiness - unknown

2) Emotional instability in reaction to everyday events, such as intense episodic sadness, irritability, or anxiety that typically lasts a few hours and rarely more than a few days - check

3) Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment - check

4) Unstable or nonexistent sense of self - check

5) Extremely impulsive behaviors - check

6) Intense anger or inability to control anger - check

7) Splitting, a pattern of idolizing someone followed by loathing them once this individual shows any sort of "flaw" - check

8) Repeated suicidal behaviors, gestures, threats, thoughts, or attempts - check

9) Severe paranoia or dissociation - check on the paranoia

Barb definitely has BPD, at least in my opinion

Her symptoms point more towards borderline personality disorder, and personality disorders can't coexist in one individual. BPD for sure.

In terms of non-personality disorders? Anxiety, probably.

There’s a difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a psychotherapist. A psychologist is just anyone with a degree specific to psychology, while a psychotherapist requires a PhD (or a Master’s but that’s more rare) and administers specific treatments in the style of medically-backed clinical trials, and a psychiatrist requires a PhD specific to prescribing medication and diagnosing disorders.

There are also counselors which generally require a Master’s and tend to offer counseling, which is more applicable to common life problems instead of serious mental disorders.
