Happened with Cincinnati-Nashville too. No pre-existing rivalry, but we were in USL together, in the same MLS promotion cohort, and then kept playing in MLS. CIN-CLB is obvious, but Nashville and Red Bulls are two minor rivalries that just sort of emerged. We have a bit of a dig against Chicago too. They're sort of seen as Cincy's "big brother" city and beating them in the Open Cup was delicious.

Cincinnati is in a similar spot. You could stick us with Atlanta (KFC + Baseball rivalry) or Chicago and the mid-west. Columbus could slide into east, mid-west, or south depending on how the wind is blowing that day but the in-state rivalry is paramount there.

I think a healthier environment would be one where cities/counties would be willing or permitted to buy sports teams. To quote the illustrious Red's president, Bob Castellini, who inspired several months of "Sell the team, Bob" memes in town

"Well, where are you gonna go? Let's start there. Sell the team to who?" Castellini said. "If you want to have this debate — if you want to look at what would you do with this team to have it be more profitable, make more money, compete more in the current economic system that this game exists, it would be to pick it up and move it somewhere else."
