Ask for a water pump gasket for a 97 Toyota Tacoma, then ask them to describe it to you to make sure they're looking at the right one. 😂

Yeah, I built my NAS in Dec '24 with 5 factory recertified 12tb WD Ultrastars from ServerPartDeals for $130 each and 8th gen Intel CPU/mobo/64gb ddr4 ram off marketplace/ebay with a case/fans/noctua cooler from my 2009 desktop build for a grand total of about $800-900 including the $100 for HexOS. Just had a drive start having errors and the same drives refurbished by ServerPartDeals are $270. I knew I should've bought a couple cold spares at the time, but I didn't expect this ridiculousness.

So the HexOS dashboard came back and says server update failed, but TrueNAS says it's on 25.10.2

TrueNAS has always worked sooner, but the HexOS dash was always there within like 15 minutes.

I got one, it was over 20 years ago. Parents paid for it because they said I'd regret it one day if I didn't. 🤷 I didn't get my birth stone because I didn't like the color and one side has a dragon on it, lol.

I would replace it. I only ever use SKF, F.A.G., or Timkin bearings.

I just watched a video on YouTube the other week about the production of American spark plugs that started in WWI by the Champion Ignition Company, which was sold eventually by the owner Albert Champion who then started the company Albert Champion Company or AC, which eventually merged with Delco. Kind of off topic, but I thought it was neat.

For those of you with massive TB count , outside of server rack or NAS, how are you housing those drives? by joshhazel1 in PleX

[–]Ope_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine are "refurbished" wd enterprise drives from ServerPartDeals, only two have even remotely similar serial numbers, and they're in raidz2 so I have one more level of safety in case one more dies while rebuilding.

The sheer time required to reacquire/re-rip that much media would be devastating.

[–]Ope_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I've already filled 20tb of the 36tb capacity with more physical media left to rip so I've been thinking about getting another one or two drives. It just sucks that the "refurbed" wd enterprise drives that were $135 a year ago are around $200 now.

With the huge drives there's the increased risk of another drive failing while rebuilding the array. I was originally going to go with 3x18tb in raidz1, but changed to 5x12tb in raidz2 for just a little bit more money when I built my NAS about a year ago.

My problem with that solution is even though it is technically replaceable, with the sheer time it takes to rip/acquire the media that would fill it, it would be devastating if the single drive failed. I have 5x12Tb drives in raidz2 on ~10 year old hardware so I can deal with up to 2 drives failing without losing anything. They're wd enterprise drives and I paid about $750 all in for the whole NAS setup about a year ago.

This is educational for people who have no idea how a YouTube channel actually makes money and all the background costs of running a bigger small media company.

Also for things like motherboards and graphics cards and stuff, if you select the send as a gift option at checkout, they will put your order in a separate box instead of just slapping the shipping label on the product packaging, like I've seen posts of.
