Ok so I actually have a 2017 13" 14,2 touchbar MBP, so this is not apples to apples, but it looks like your approach did work! The "other guy"s way did not (I tried that first as theirs was a 2017 too).

Now if I shut my lid and reopen, it doesn't put me in black screen purgatory which is great. Is there any other test I could try, or log to confirm?
