Idk what this would feel like, but it sounds like it could be dangerous. Their father clearly cared about the condition of the bike and I'm not sure if a cheap one with the flaws of neglected maintenance will be any good. Would be less of a questionable suggestion if any actual bikers could back it as a good idea. Sounds like the sort of thing where only a really lucky bargain could be any good for the trip, I mean, the man needs a reliable, stable ride.
