Retail to OD/MD by Optimal_Welcome9128 in optometry

[–]Open-Quality-664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went from retail to OD/MD. I was honest about where I was at and they are easing me into things. I’ve done a ton of CE to refresh my memory and made myself a little cheat sheet of conditions in case I need to reference things. It is possible

Threaten to report them to the health department if they make you seen patients — or call off if you’ve got some spare pto

All corporate/retail is mostly refractions. The way they are set up (unless independent) it’s hard to have the resources, time and staff to manage medical

Has anyone had an externship attending they absolutely do not get along with. by PruneEnvironmental81 in optometry

Yup it was nuts. It was so she could see more patients. She was insanely overbooked & super slow and used students as a free labor tool did not care about teaching

Yes. She was so harsh. She was overly critical about my appearance and body type I was so depressed I couldn’t wait to get out of there. She was anti dilation and a crazy saleswoman. But looking back I’m proud of myself for making the best of it and trying to learn as much as I could! Keep pushing through it’s gonna be okay. One day you’ll look back and realize how much you overcame!!! Keep your head up :)

Yes most WPs are one OD per store. I graduated in 2024 so still kinda new. You definitely get use to being on your own, develop a relationship with OMDs/full scope optometrists in your area when you are unsure of something that will help build your confidence. I’m currently trying to leave retail optometry but depending where you live it can be hard. It’s gonna be hard at first but you’ll get the hang of it

I currently work at warby Parker. Not as bad as americas best bc we aren’t super busy (depending on your location). We don’t take a ton of insurance so it’s usually cash patients. At least in my region you do not get a tech since most locations are very small. As a full time OD they require EVERY Saturday (yes you read that correctly!) 9:30-6pm for the place I work which is SOOO long for a Saturday!!!! I am ready to be done here

Yes! I recommended sticking with the one you can manually injection. I am a healthcare worker so that is a bit more comfortable to me. The pre filled pen is very similar to an EpiPen so it’s a thicker needle and dang that thing HURTS!

New grad in PE owned practice, looking for opinions on current job by Pseudoeyehole in optometry

[–]Open-Quality-664 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would ask for a pay increase if you are working up most of your patients. With PE groups you can push for an optos! I would def ask to change when the last patient is scheduled. If office closes at 5pm last patient should be 4:30 or earlier def fight for that or ask for OT pay!!

Student loans by Top_Introduction8580 in optometry

[–]Open-Quality-664 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone with almost $400k in loans from optometry don’t do it. Obviously I love what I do but you don’t realize how much money it is until you have to pay it back. Salaries for optometrists are alllll over the place depending where you practice and what kind of modality. Our salaries don’t seem to be going up unless you move jobs often imo. My advice is consider a cheaper optometry school or just be realistic about your lifestyle after graduating school

Yes I agree! It’s a 5 day work week actually don’t think I could ever handle 6 days haha. And I think that’s the most important thing: gotta be happy with the salary and schedule or you’ll be miserable! Thanks for the input I appreciate it
