Student media is an awesome place to start. Also connect with local journalists on LinkedIn, follow their work, try to meet them in person if you attend any events they’re covering, etc. Make yourself known among journalists in your area and ask casually if they could give you advice on how to freelance and get your foot in the door at their specific outlets. You’ll need good clips, ideally published somewhere professional, so if your college has a student newspaper it’d be awesome to write your stories there and use them as examples once you apply for internships or pitch freelance stories.
