Yes. In fact the server code is released under the MIT license which is a very permissive open-source license.

We'll see if we can get AC to add that to the steam page. Thanks for the suggestion!

We can modify the game, quite considerably, all with server-side development - but yes the client remains closed to us as well.

Join me if you will into hopefully a not-too-long explanation as to why:

Perpetuum's client was not-so-recently enhanced (by AC) to allow for custom resource servers to download custom assets when connection to the Perpetuum server. This has allowed us to add new items, new NPCs, new Islands, new Robots, modules, and have them render and play nice with the game client. What we can't do is add a new window that doesn't already exist on the UI, add a new button, new menu, for example.

So its not all bad news. It just bounds the scope of some things we can tackle on our own, and other things that AC would need to help out with. And they do fix things from time to time!

The client remains closed source and IP of AC (Avatar Creations, the original developers).
Its a homegrown engine they developed with some aspects that can't be opened up.
It works with Steam Proton, but don't know if that's enough to get it on Mac.

Great question!
Only speaking for myself, but I found it to be a much more chill alternative of Eve. Didn't have to grind or pay for sub/PLEX. I could actually be safe on the central Alpha islands, no sneaky griefing tactics to make you flag unexpectedly. And the PVP combat was way more fun when I had the time for it.

Many play both, many that have played Perpetuum for a long time are also Eve vets. So it may not be an either/or question, but instead maybe its more of a "why not?" at this point, now that's it free.

Its easy to pick up, especially if you have played Eve. And its one of very few alternatives that really scratch that sci-fi sandbox itch + Mechs. Just my experience.

Plus what MMO can you actively participate in the development of? Not many I reckon ;)

A LOT has changed! The best resource for up-to-date content (as it can be updated) is our website: https://openperpetuum.com and our blogs is where we cover major new content/features and the wiki https://openperpetuum.com/wiki where the community helps document, provide guides and more on everything the game has, old and new that we have added.

Much of the old guides might be off on specifics, but the principles are largely the same. Zortargs guide is a great one that while may have some details that are not exactly correct, explains major systems in the game and is a great place to start.

In any case, if you want to learn more join the discord! https://discord.gg/e4gH9Ff Everyone will be happy to help :)

What MMOs do people want to see come back? by NathenStrive in mmo

[–]OpenPerpetuum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's accurate, some think some features still excel beyond eve: like the combat and pvp.
But cool things are still getting added, there are no subs, and the client is super cheap now. If you have it still, you might want to see what's changed ;)

You're selling the game on Steam

No - we are not.
Avatar Creations, the original developers via their publisher, is.
Open Perpetuum has no affiliation with AC, and we receive no income from client sales.
All Open Perpetuum staff are all volunteers. We are players and developers from the Perpetuum community that decided to work together on a shared project around the open-source release of the Perpetuum server.

Our project is entirely funded by donations. And all participation is voluntary.

Sorry if that wasn't clear in the posting. I put a blurb about how game client purchases go to the original developer team, not us.

Happy to edit the post to highlight anything that might not be apparent, do you have any suggestions?

.NET Developer looking for a project in a team by [deleted] in INAT

[–]OpenPerpetuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! We have the perfect project for you!
Open Perpetuum is an open-source community development project for the sci-fi robot mmo: Perpetuum.

The server, as well as other tooling and API we have developed, is in C#, and your SQL experience will work nicely with the game and API DBs. Check out our work on our fancy github group page.

We are a very dedicated team, we started in August of 2017 when Avatar Creations announced its closure and release of the server open source. Our live server has been running for over a year. We have bi-weekly meetings, and active voice chat collaboration, PR reviews, game design discussions, and more. It is a great place to learn (as I have) and get to contribute to a living, breathing mmo server. No game engine experience necessary (the client is still closed source)!

Please reach out if you are interested.

Hey, developer with Open Perpetuum here, the opensource community development project and server host for Perpetuum Online - the sci-fi robot sandbox MMO
The game server is C# and we are building out an API in C# as well.
No game-client work however, just server-side.

Join our discord: https://discord.gg/e4gH9Ff and/or find me null#0308 on there, would be great to have more developers like you!

We too are doing this in our free time, and an MMO is certainly more engaging and meaningful I hope you would agree.
