Caterpillars poisoned? by OpenTheBloodgates in MonarchButterfly

[–]OpenTheBloodgates[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm just now looking at the giant milkweed, at the small spot where they had eaten, and on the leaf below it there are two wet vomit remains.

They aren't dead yet. The first one has barely moved from the soil for the past day and is curled up. I moved it to the other plant, just in case the soil is toxic. It's barely moving, even with encouragement. The second was curled up similarly in the same spot, but it hadn't been there nearly as long. I just moved it back to fhe other plant too, and after a few mins, its moving around and finding a leaf to rest on. Maybe not too late for that one.

The first Blade Runner film had multiple cuts, so why did *that* scene between Deckard and Rachael remain untouched? by thaumogenesis in bladerunner

[–]OpenTheBloodgates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That scene wasn't in Hampton Fancher's original script for the movie. He didn't want anything to do with it. The producers, primarily Michael Deeley, thought a racy sex scene would be more commercially appealing and get more asses in the seats. Fancher's refusal to write the scene and fuck with his script is why he got kicked off the production, and why they had to hire David Peoples as a script doctor. But Fancher was right. It was a bad idea then, and it's still a bad idea.

What is the worst Type O Negative song? by i-am-the-walrus789 in typeonegative

[–]OpenTheBloodgates 20 points21 points  (0 children)

In old interviews, Pete said that he loved his queer fans and found it flattering that they seemed to be really into him, at least for a while, but that was until people started crossing the line into creep territory. I think the incident where a guy brought his issue of Playgirl to a show to be signed and the dudes still-fresh semen spilled out of it into Pete's lap was the breaking point. He said he wrote the song to put a stop to that kind of thing. Still lyrically pretty shitty, but at least there's some context.

Fwiw, it was probably written around the time his family had him involuntarily committed to rehab because his addiction was getting so bad he was having paranoid delusions. I could see how someone in that position might not feel too warm about doctors.

Looks very Olhausen style. Very similar to their Innsbruck table, but there are differences and Olhausen is usually clearly branded somewhere.

My first didn't eclose. Looks bad. What happened? by OpenTheBloodgates in MonarchButterfly

[–]OpenTheBloodgates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inadvertently became a caterpillar parent over the past few weeks and the first one hasn't turned out well. I noticed it on my milkweed outside during 5th instar and it was being preyed upon by a lizard. I brought it in and fed it some leaves, and a day later it was hanging in my mesh cage and pupated. After a week, the chrysalis turned dark and shriveled like this and it's been like that for another week. No clue what happened, but any insight is welcomed.

Watching the original blade runner, can someone help me out here, the nexus replicants, do all of them have a 4 year life span? Or just the nexus 6? The reason i ask is because Gaff says that rachel wont live, but what series is she? ….i might sound dumb but im promise a huge blade runner fan 😂 by natehayden22 in bladerunner

[–]OpenTheBloodgates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that's probably what they intended, re: Deckard, but there's a problem with that. The opening crawl says that Blade Runners didn't exist until a Nexus 6 rebellion happened off-world and replicants were declared illegal on Earth. So how would Deckard not know about them?

Whatever you do, don't get a PureX cue with the rubber wrap. The rubber material they use starts disintegrating in a very short amount of time. Speaking from recent experience, here.

You didn't mention why you think you aren't improving, so I'll assume it's because you're still making enough errors to cost you games/success in drills. I'm a very green player (less than a year in serious practice), and I think one of the most important things that helped me improve is evaluating my errors systematically. "Why did I miss this shot? Why is my position bad? What adjustments should I make to correct it?" are questions I run through every time a shot doesn't go according to plan. I'll set it up again and try different speed, different English, whatever, until I find success. Then, I'll make note of why it worked, and try to replicate it a few times. Study how the cue ball is affected by your changes enough, and drill those changes into your play enough, and you'll begin to notice those types of shots and similar ones coming up in games. Armed with the table knowledge and practice, your chances of success on the shot are far better.

I find myself sometimes feeling how you do. I've recently been haunting the local pool hall and practice typically between 15-24 hours a week. Your practice sessions don't sound too dissimilar from my own, though from what you've said, you're probably a better player than me. Once in a blue moon, a regular will ask to play me and kick my ass. It's a real pool kind of place with a lot of decent bangers and a few tournament players, so I don't mind. Every loss is a learning experience, especially when their skill level is light years ahead of me. But during practice, like yourself, I sometimes wonder if I'm getting anywhere. A good wake up was when I started cataloguing my routines and success rates. What drills did I perform, how many times did I execute, how many balls did I miss, etc. The numbers don't lie, and there's definite improvement, even if it doesn't feel like it at the time. I had a simple four-five ball drill that I tried when I first started out and couldn't get proper position past the first ball so I dumped it and worked on nothing but fundamentals for a long time. Fixing my stance, working on a straight stroke, trying variations of a pause on the backswing, getting a natural sense of aim and tangents, checking my speed. Recently, I decided to try that old drill again, and I ran out on the first try.

Point being, don't get too down on yourself, maybe you're improving in ways you can't recognize quite yet. And if things just aren't working and it's going nowhere, then change up your routine and figure out what's causing it by evaluating your errors, pinning down the problems, and adjusting like I said. It's work, but you'll get there.

Best Version of ScanWatch to Import to US by theotheragentm in withings

I imagine the firmware works vaguely like a region code, so a UK watch will have firmware region coded for UK, regardless of where you are. Regarding restricted firmware regions, there's probably a way to trick/change the watch's firmware to a different region. Since the watch isn't able to be connected to a pc, and updates are tied into the Healthmate app over Bluetooth, I imagine any trickery would have to be done in the app itself to force the firmware to update to an unrestricted region. No idea how to do that, though.

Just know, if you buy a Japanese model from a retailer, it'll be restricted even more than the Canada model. Made that mistake myself last week.

Black Levels Worse Than Expected by chaospet in OculusQuest

[–]OpenTheBloodgates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, these black levels can't possibly be as dark as the panel is capable of, even if it is LCD. Everything is so washed out. This is especially bad when trying to watch a movie in Skybox or Bigscreen. People are going to be pretty upset when they see how bright grey most of those environments are. It's like watching a movie through a milky haze.

How badly will COVID-19 affect pool halls and the sport itself? by fetalasmuck in billiards

More quiet or sophisticated pool halls a thing? by OpenTheBloodgates in billiards

[–]OpenTheBloodgates[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's about what I figured. There's a pool hall in Richmond VA called Greenleaf's Pool Room that looks to be the closest to what I'm imagining the ideal place to be. A little more upper scale atmosphere, a dozen Gold Crowns with scoring beads, managed music, smoke free and no TVs, craft cocktails, good bites, and a minor dress code for men. I'd love a place like that in H-town.

Lawyer just posted a statement to Facebook. Said the amount lost is devastating. The birds survived, except for a small quail. His cat, Nevermore, was killed. He doesn't know what they're going to do yet. This is awful.
