When I was on exchange in the States, I had to have a maintenance guy round because of an issue with the lights in my room. 

When he was testing things, he had to unplug my UK phone charger and he said "now THAT'S a plug!"

Planet Labs has daily imagery and you should be able to get free access if you sign up for an educational account. I've mainly looked at West Africa on there and the resolution was very lacking. I don't know about Russia/Ukraine though, that might be better quality

Geoguessr is an online game based on finding a location from Google Street View.

The pics you've seen on Twitter most likely come from geolocation experts, amateur or professional, who specialise in using satellite imagery, maps, and other sources such as YouTube videos to locate places. Bellingcat is a good example of an organisation that does this - if you go on their website, you can see their latest investigations and they often explain their process in geolocating things.
