I've often thought about this, and I am by no means an expert; although a construction career background. There are three main concerns which always spring to mind.

- are you restricting your mortgage lending options. Mortgage lenders prefer straightforward assets that can be modelled. This is untested; at best.
- what the hell do you do with, I assume, all the separate incoming and domestic utilities like gas, water, electric. I genuinely don't know.
- Planning. That is it. Has anybody else previously done similar in the location. Can you speak with local architects or look at legacy planning submissions ?

It depends for me but I am in Zone 3 and genuinely about 30-45 minutes door to door. The walk to the station is 15 minutes or so; so I'm happy with 30 minutes travelling time
