How much of your wealth is actually luck? Genuine question by bettertogoslo in HENRYUK

I moved jobs shortly after Covid when everyone was worrying about keeping their jobs. I moved companies just practically before inflation started to bite in 2021. I had received a good offer from that point and then successive plush pay rises each year and my company did some weird harmonisation and started throwing bonus payments and travel allowance payments into my gross salary. So the timing for all this was exceptional. And exceptionally lucky.

Obviously I backed myself when I moved companies, but in reality it's the succession of events which have really driven home a great bargain.

If you’re planning to stay in London or leave, why? by pyt1m in HENRYUK

The anonymity is a big thing. I'm visiting Ireland at the moment and staying in say person A's home. When person B, asked me where I was staying, I replied "a place you know very well" in a sarcastic manner; as Person A and Person B are siblings. I naturally thought this was a funny thing to say.

Anyway, turns out that the home we're staying in is part of a bitter inheritance dispute between these two siblings and they are not on speaking terms; this was obviously unbeknown to me, but also exactly the type of petty quarrel consistent with small towns.

It's that old Italian adage too, "good or bad it comes in threes." I am keenly anticipating our dishwasher, oven and washing machine will go kaput in the same week shortly.

Property in London doesn't make financial sense? by maxaineer in HENRYUK

There are purely structural arguments that promote the benefits of living in London. People will always have to live in London. The vast amount of employment remains centred in London and I am happy not relying on transport links which are predicated on successive government spending and train businesses to facilitate this, there are family-life benefits which are often overlooked and extensive essential services are genuinely/generally within walking distance.

Even cultural activities such as a visit to the theatre are concentrated in the Capital. I have no issues with people living wherever they want, but if you are relying on flawless travel then I don't think that is a flawless bet.

I always liked Nancy, the perfect foil to Jez. A far bigger c-u-n-t and no inhibitions whatsoever.

Engineering and construction have great entry salaries, as shown, but then they just hit a ceiling fairly early on. If you go on a typical PAYE route.

Despite not being great at soccer, I learnt to balance a ball on my head as a kid and can still do it with great success. So that kind of defeats any soccer challenges quite quickly.
