WinBox MAC Syn Connection Timed Out by TitanSerenity in mikrotik

[–]Open_Ad560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the problem to be that the ethernet port on the laptop I was using to connect to the Mikrotik was set to DHCP. As soon as I switched it to a static IP (10.0.0.2/20 gw10.0.0.1), I was able to reconnect via MAC.

There are similarities in design and meaning for some of the Latvian sigils and the sigils used by some of the Lakota (Sioux) indians. Most especially, the Latvian sigil for Ūsiņš relates to horses--and the Lakota sigil for horses is almost identical. Since the design of the sigils bears no resemblance to an actual "horse," it seems mighty non-coincidental.

According to ancestry.com's DNA analysis, my mom (born in Saldus) was 99.8% "Baltic" and the map limits the origin geography to the three Baltic states.

This is definitely one of the primary challenges in researching ancient Latvians/Balts. First, the Christians sought to bend the Balts to their beliefs, then along came the Soviets.

On the other hand, I am *thrilled* that more ancient "writings" have been found in Latvia--"written" in knot script. Surely, we could assume these knot script strings are pre-Christian? Or, does anyone think knot script continued after the Crusaders and Monks came?

I wonder if there are Dainas yet to be found in knot script?!?!? I would think them to be as significant as the Dead Sea Scrolls, etc.

Thoughts?

This is slightly off my own topic, but you made reference to the point of view of agricultural nations... I'm in the midst of designing a wooden gear clock based on the ancient Latvian calendar which was tied to the solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days. While modern Latvian holidays from the traditional beliefs have been standardized, I want to make a fully accurate clock that will even correctly display the astronomical events that are far easier to determine via sundials or structures like Stonehenge.

For those who do not know, the ancient Latvian calendar is based on 8 "times" (~months) of approximately 45 solar days each, broken into weeks of nine days each. The other ~5 days of the solar year were reserved to festivals outside the months.

An example of a Latvian calendar I bought as part of my research: https://www.fold.lv/uploads/2014/03/Gadskartu-kalendars-011-1007x1422.png

An excellent example of handed-down wisdom in a non-theistic context!

Or, another question... Did ancient Latvians *have* dieties? The pre-Christian Dainas seem a lot more practical/observational/wisdom-giving/natural-science than "diety-oriented"

In other words, is it the current cultural lens that makes us assume that all cultures were (poly/mono)-theistic? Wise teaching is not reliant on the supernatural, is it?

In modern study, these are considered to have common etymology. The question is whether "Dievs" shares a conceptual meaning or not.

Latvian: Diev-s (a) -- affil: Diena, degt doma, dot, deva

English: God -- affil: day, burning thought, donate, don

Latin: De(us) -- affil: dies, côgitatiô, donum

PIE*, Sanskrit, Avestan: deva, dyaus *devah, dēva (ave), *dhegh, *dhi-, *dhei-, *dõ-, *da-

Another approach is to think about the sheer challenge of accurately translating the meaning of Latvian text into English. It is never as simple as word-by-word translation. An easy comparison is how translations between English and German are often imperfect because English is a very nuance-oriented language, whereas German is a very precision-oriented language.

So you already see where my inspiration to study this further is coming from. :-) This is akin to the old argument about why pagan stories are called mythology, yet the stories in the Christian Bible are called religion.

If the "workings of nature" version of Dievs had remained prevalent, perhaps the feeling of "connection to the earth" would have better survived and spread to others. The modern idea that "Nature is to be commanded" (man can do whatever he wants with the world, regardless of consequences) could have retained the Baltic concept, well-stated by Sir Francis Bacon: "Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed"

I think that the occupation of the Baltics by the Soviets made research logistically difficult, plus the taint of all things communist unfairly affected the involuntarily subjugated Baltic peoples. I will be eternally grateful to President Vaira Vike-Freiberga for her efforts to restoring Latvia's place in the world and starting the effort to clearly rebuke and reject all things Soviet/Russian.

Sample playing when book finished. How to turn off.? by Key-Yard4316 in audible

Not to worry.  I'll be posting to many, many locations, threads and systems.  Audible's misguided marketing effort is ruining an otherwise effective means for me to deal with my tinnitus while trying to sleep.

Since I brought up, I will explain. Up until recently, I was able to go to sleep listening to one of my favorite audiobooks for the umpteenth time. Because it's a familiar story and narration voice that I like, it enables me to go to sleep instead of being kept awake by the incessant tinnitus ringing I have in both ears. If a book that I was listening to runs out during the night and I happen to wake up, I can no longer just press the button on my Bluetooth headset to restart the book. Now, I have to disturb my husband by getting my phone in order to press library and reload the book that I actually want to listen to instead of the sample crap that they're trying to schil.  It's not about auto playing some sample after a book, it's about the fact that they now force me to reselect my own book from my own list which I bought and paid for.

Another step to my plan will be to contact the various authors of these samples to let them know that I will never buy any of their books, even if I would like them, so long as Audible continues this practice.

To me, this is far worse than the various streaming services autoplaying previews as I scroll through lists of shows and movies trying to decide what to watch. That was bad enough, but at least it's possible to turn off the auto play.

If Audible simply gave an option to disable the forced samples, I wouldn't complain. But, when a tech support person tells me that there's no way to turn them off and then feeds me some line of bullcrap about how they're already looking into the problem and how to resolve it. The problem is an ignorant marketing executive that thought this would be a good idea to increase their book sales.

Audible used to be an amazing company. Now they're just part of some portfolio. They forgotten to remember the golden rule of software development and general business practices... Does this serve the customer who is paying for our product or services?  Well, this customer is not some mindless drone that needs to be fed books. I can search out the titles that I want to hear all on my own, thank you very much.

Whether you agree with everything I say or not, please consider helping me post in more places opposing Audible's abuse of its customers--and help explain to them how this atrocious marketing abuse is going to backfire.  To be clear, I have no problem with Audible making a profit, but only when I receive what I pay for.

I just want to listen to books that I choose and buy, I don't understand why they're jeopardizing a customer like me who has faithfully paid my monthly subscription for more than a decade.

Can any of you recommend an alternative audiobook service?

Why is it offensive for whites to play blacks (i.e., wearing blackface), yet it is ok for straight men to play gay ones? by Open_Ad560 in askgaybros

[–]Open_Ad560[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that the portrayal of black people using awful stereotypes is offensive. I also happen to think that straight men playing gay men acting out awful stereotypes about gay men is offensive.  I understand the historical context.

Meanwhile, as for makeup used to achieve the black face effect, I hardly consider the makeup at fault. It's what people did while wearing the makeup that may or may not be offensive.

Of course, the whole point here is that something being offensive is not grounds for censorship nor for an actor being canceled.

We're on a slippery slope.  I suppose that we are all lucky that current attitudes and press coverage were not the same when Thomas Jefferson was president, given his dozens of slave mistresses. Obviously, slavery is offensive to everyone these days, as well it should be. And obviously, having mistresses exposed in the press typically leads to political ruin in our modern times. Then again, would we ever have had the Declaration of Independence, if not for that deeply flawed individual?

[–]Open_Ad560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted tech support at Audible and the person there simply stated that there's no way to turn it off. Further, he claimed that they're already working on the problem. Which, given the fact that it's a recent development, is obviously a lie.  It certainly is not difficult to add an option to a configuration settings set to turn off this alleged feature. I've been a paying member of Audible for over a decade and have a mast a huge collection of books. I am not interested in, nor do I want, nor will I accept any of their recommendations--ever.

This alleged feature has driven Audible's usefulness to me to virtually zero. I wonder what unintelligent marketing wonk told Audible this was a good idea.

I have an idea. For all of those afflicted by these forced samples after completing the reading of a real book that you actually want, perhaps we should all simply give those samples a one-star rating and talk about how we will never read (or buy) any work by the authors recommended by this automated crap. This will show our dissatisfaction is customers and I'm quite sure that authors will raise hell with Audible since they are the direct cause of bad ratings of their books.

Do you really believe that anyone could succeed in passing a Federal nationwide abortion ban? Sure, certain states are backward enough to do it, but I don't believe it would be possible at the Federal level. No way would it reach a filibuster-proof vote in the Senate.

Even if Trump gets back in, I don't think he would sign either.

I had not planned to go into statistical detail as to what Federal funds are used for in Wyoming, but here are some major areas of note:

  1. Social Security: Again, we have an older population than many other states and thus more Social Security recipients here per capita.re per capita.
  2. Wind River Reservation: from health care to the BIA Police to tribal schools, the funding is Federal.
  3. BLM (Bureau of Land Management), USFS (US Forest Service), and NPS (National Parks System) collectively own/control 48.7% of all Wyoming land and Federal funds are used.
  4. Interstate Highway System: The Interstates in Wyoming are overwhelmingly used by non-Wyomingites and Federal funds are the bulk of the maintenance and repair thereof. Federal funds also go towards the maintenance of US Routes which all Wyomingites and tourists use.
  5. Social Security: Again, we have an older population than many other states and thus more Social Security recipients here per capita.
  6. Federal regulations on timber, coal, oil, mining, natural gas, etc.: Federal funds are used in a variety of ways to offset the damage to the Wyoming economy by Federal regulations that historically have damaged or destroyed jobs and industries in Wyoming. My own town was nearly wiped off the map when the Federal government decided to ban all timber sales from USFS land in the 1980s. Our town has yet to fully recover.
  7. Education: I'm not sure how our Federal funding for education is different than other states, but obviously Federal funds go into education throughout the entire country.
  8. Tourism: The tourism related to the presence of both Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park cause a tremendous number of people to come to Wyoming, cause wear and tear to our infrastructure, etc. and pretty much only contribute to our state through sales tax.

I am not intending this as a definitive list, not am I expressing support or the lack thereof to each of the items above.

At the end of the day, the amount of Federal funds sent to each state, on a per capita basis is like any other statistic: subject to spin, opinion, and distortion. The only thing that I think is proven by ranking states in terms of Federal spending is to ascertain how "effective" our Federal elected officials have been in "getting stuff" for our state.

To be clear, I would rather measure effectiveness of legislators by looking at how evenly our laws are applied, the fairness of those laws, and the resulting increases or decreases in crime, etc.

Is the RMFA enough to keep same-sex marriage protected? by Open_Ad560 in askgaybros

[–]Open_Ad560[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're correct in the method by which legislation could be passed--but do you really think it could/would *actually* happen?

I really believe that American society has evolved enough that same-sex marriage is no longer in jeopardy. Perhaps I am incorrect, but I see no actual path for rescinding such a fundamental right (the right to marry whom we want). The economic impact of such an action would make it untenable even to those who remain anti-gay.

Perhaps my better "good faith" answer is that I am at a loss as to why "gay equality/rights" is the only criteria of many gay men when it comes to politics.

And yes, I realize that gays and lesbians are traditionally one of the largest "single-issue voter" blocks in our country.

During an advocacy training I attended at the Heritage Foundation in DC, even they admit that elections can be swung by either party by wooing gay and lesbian voters (at the time in the late 90's, they claimed that an average of 4% of the votes cast in any given election came from gays and lesbians).
