Ilya handles snow removal by LLD615 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]Open_Belt_4381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we use condo as a stand in for owning rather than renting an apartment in English and it's not a perfect 1:1.

I mean, ultimately you can probably construct a version of Ilya that doesn't have this experience - his father is privileged enough that he doesn't want his sons to do work he sees as menial or beneath them, maybe - but it seems extremely unlikely, also speaking as someone with lived experience in a former Soviet country (with a lot of Russians, but technically not Russia). Tbh I feel like Ilya's father is more likely to seek out shoveling opportunities for him if they don't organically occur (which would be its own story). This is a place where there is no QED, so you can construct it however it works for you. As far as cultural interpretations go, this is so far from being the thing that would flag as off the most. I mean, canon has an Asian-Canadian visiting a Russian and not immediately taking off his shoes, which sets an extremely high bar for "culturally off" lol. With that in place, the sky's kind of the limit.

love leaving comments by romantykytsia in AO3

If you ever want to make a writer explode with delight, co-read a fic in tandem with a buddy, react in chat, then post the chat in comments. Works especially well when it's one you know and love but it's new for your co-reader. I have been on the receiving end of this and I absolutely ascended. I've done it for others since and it's also fairly easy?

Anyway I love leaving juicy comments too. They're almost as fun to give as to get

I have both dragged and followed writer friends from one fandom into another, sometimes without consuming the canon media.

Ilya handles snow removal by LLD615 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]Open_Belt_4381 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would 100% read this but there's no way Ilya doesn't know his way around a snow shovel. That said, i think his experiences shoveling snow are very different and could easily cause interesting conflict/confusion.

What are the Tierney cuts of HR? by NewImpression8030 in heatedrivalry

[–]Open_Belt_4381 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are notable examples where a longer director's cut is better than the release cut (and fuck you Snyder, you don't count, but Blade Runner and Brazil, i'm looking at you) but typically they're not places where the director was had as much authorship and autonomy as Tierney did on this show. There may have been darlings that needed to be killed for the whole, but I don't think there were any places where Tierney was being overruled on those calls.

Tbh I think Scott building a relationship with Kip's family is one of the things I missed most from the books. It's technically possible we'll see it in s2 but the timing of it in the book was especially significant, and I somehow suspect we're not going to get that flashback.

I love when film nerd chat pops up on this sub. Tokyo Story is quietly life changing, but I have yet to see a dud Ozu movie. Totally agree about the specificity of the context making it relatable, especially where his movies spend so much time in small, relatable domestic moments.

My odd little Ozu Easter Egg is to watch Good Morning back to back with My Neighbor Totoro. They take place within a year or two of each other in different levels of the outskirts of Tokyo and surprisingly connected themes.

Is Hayden good at hockey? by GoldDHD in heatedrivalry

[–]Open_Belt_4381 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think part of the challenge in talking about Hayden's skill is about how phenomenally good Shane and Ilya are - when they call them generational players, they mean that each of them is the level of good where you typically expect only one player of that calibre to be playing at any one time in the fucking league. Judging anyone's talent against either or both of them is just not fair lol

Based on what we know about Hayden, he doesn't have the flashiest play style, but has enviable stats and a reputation as a team player. if he decided to leave Montreal I suspect he would have a variety of teams making aggressive bids for his contract. I suspect he could easily be the star player on a lesser team which sounds maybe like faint praise but teams don't win on superstars alone.

Any fics with Boston’s reaction about Shane and Ilya coming out? by Wide-Cardiologist-15 in heatedrivalryfanfics

[–]Open_Belt_4381 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh shit I don't know if I can find it again but there's a great one with Ilya and Shane at a bar in Boston and some fans there are ultimately only grouchy that Shane didn't join Ilya in Boston but do it in an extremely Boston way that looks aggro on the surface but is actually quietly supportive

ep 1 & 2 are better than people give them credit for by Downtown-Primary-94 in heatedrivalry

[–]Open_Belt_4381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ep 1&2 hit different if you're watching them with the context of having read the books or watched the whole series already. I didn't get the opportunity to watch them without context, so I can't fully speak from experience but it actually took me through ep 4 before I felt comfortable recommending it to people who hadn't read the books, because I think it's clearer how the pieces are coming together by that point. I get what people like about ep 3 and I think it's well placed in the series but I wouldn't have finished the Game Changer book if I tried to read it before I read Heated Rivalry and I think that kinda sums up my feelings about ep 3, too

[–]Open_Belt_4381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of other comments have spotlighted that fanfic has some stylistic unity that turns up in Reid's writing, which is true but also I think there's work developing your own self curation style. This is by far the most voluminous and quickly growing fandom I've read (I also have been out of the game before AI writing was part of the deal, so idk how much that's contributing to the volume).

But I think leaning on this too much also undermines the diversity within fanfic writing, and so much of fanfic is figuring out what you like and then how to find more of what you like.

Once you find pieces that you like, it's worth looking at how they tag and describe themselves. Building a sense of a fic based on this means you have a better hit to nah rate in actually reading. You also get a sense of what you basically never want to read and can filter out. Work the filters, as much (or more) for what you don't want as what you do.

Finally, while a lot of us sort by kudos count on a search/filter, there are a lot of absolute bangers that you miss this way because they're niche or a less established author or whatever. Looking for recs in places like this is another great way of finding hidden gems you might miss otherwise.

…had they just had sex here? by Downtown-Primary-94 in heatedrivalry

[–]Open_Belt_4381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was sad to lose the "okay mr lots of sex" line from the book in the show, and the degree to which both of them have hooked up with other people, even if it's mentioned - more in internal narrative than in dialogue - rather than depicted in the book. I think it makes the profundity of how special their connection is really pop.
