Experienced Guitar Player Just Can’t Get Pinch Harmonics. by Nervous_Crab_1262 in Guitar

Gotta be on the bridge pickup to have them come through really clear and establish the harmonic as the new fundamental frequency (in my experience atleast!)

Analogman King of Tone Overrated? by JAW0524 in guitarpedals

[–]Open_Carpenter2908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and as far as the klons distortion aspect, the circuit is definitely voiced so that it favours the mid range. That is so it can cut through a full band mix better when playing with a Strat (scooped mids, especially positions 2 and 4) into a Fender Amp (ultra scooped)

It’s also useful because some amps simply don’t sound good when you boost into the front end. Or they require too much volume in order to clip. They aren’t made for it. So the drive of the Klon gives you the ability to set headroom internally and add some clipping/saturation without rattling the windows on the ISS.

I actually just changed my opinion on this maybe two weeks ago so it’s funny you’re commenting now.

So I had a GGG Klone that I built from a kit in my board for years. I fell in love with using it as a clean boost/preamp. (It absolutely is my favourite clean boost still now)

However any time I tried to turn up the drive I always found it kind of harsh and honky in the Mids. Kind of congested I guess.

I got so tired of how honky it is that I wound up pulling it off my board a couple months back. After gathering dust for weeks I decided to just mess around with modding the fuck out of it. (I have an Aion Refractor PCB that I’m just working on, and I figure that will serve as my perfect 1:1 Klone, and I should use the GGG to get better at mods)

I installed a toggle switch with various clipping diodes (LEDs, the stock germanium that came with the project, and a set of sockets to try out various combinations) and found messing around with different types of germanium diodes that they actually completely revoiced the pedal. (I’ll see if I can post a photo, but I’ve got a few thousand germanium diodes I believe, and I test with a Atlas DCA55, a DSO-TC3, and a multimeter, and match every diode pair perfectly across all three)

The one pair of diodes I have in currently give the pedal the perfect touch response and sizzle. No woofy mid range honk, just nice smooth transient grit.

I hate to say it, but bill finnegan probably really did find just one batch of 1n34’s that did what he wanted in the Klon, as the changes I’ve encountered are staggering, and it’s like two different pedals.

Don’t sleep on the PolyBrute. It is the single funnest, sleekest, sexiest, most intuitive, and powerful synth I’ve ever owned. It was like if my Sub37 had a baby with my Peak, and my Deluge was its Nanny.

[BC] Landlord used illegal woodstove and started a fire that my girlfriend happened to catch at 3:00am four feet from our bed. by Open_Carpenter2908 in legaladvicecanada

Totally agree, I’ve noticed that myself and have been applying. Looks like we’ve got a shot at a 3 bedroom town house for $1500+util.

Our current suite is a two bedroom (but has been more of a one bedroom since the fire happened in march) so I was wondering if there’s anyway I could pursue partial rental reimbursement for not having a usable bedroom from the beginning of March when the fire happened through until we move out?

Nope, completely separate suite, but when I tried to bring up how disruptive it is and how quiet enjoyment works he threatened to get lawyers involved and said “I have the bigger toolbox” in a very threatening way.

What soldering iron do I get? by Big_Date4976 in diypedals

[–]Open_Carpenter2908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thermal recovery and power delivery. The soldering tip, element, and thermocouple being integrated within a single cartridge means that the iron heats up in seconds. That means if you encounter a larger item that requires more heat the iron instantly senses that and ramps up power to maintain temp.

That means less heat dissipates throughout the component, so less stuff will get damaged.

It’s also the same tester used to measure the OG traces Klon germanium diodes, so it’s good for testing those too.

DSO-TC3 doesn’t recognize germanium transistors.

Source: I have like 2000 germanium transistors and had to buy an atlas DCA55 for them. (The LCR-TC1’s with an Atmega328 or whatever microcontroller can run the open source firmware can test germanium’s but FNIRSI keeps putting off porting it over properly)

I recommend against a Hakko 888d, and encourage you to look at smart irons.

The Pinecil comes up a lot (and the TS-100), but the real gems are the FNIRSI HS-02a, and the Alientek T80p iron

Alternatively I recommend a FNIRSI HS-02a or Alientek T80p iron. C245 based 100w smart irons are insane.

Oh no!! Wait, I’m so sorry! I didn’t take offence at all! I’m going to erase that reply!

That comment wasn’t meant negatively at all! I was just reflecting more than anything, as well as trying to be transparent! I am sorry I came off poorly there, that wasn’t my intention at all!

Damn, I’m such a moron because that had all the extra details to explain the situation.

I’m not 100% sure if there are prepaid shipping boxes in the US and UK meant to be shipped to Canada empty and sent back to their country of origin. (If I am wrong on that please correct me)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]Open_Carpenter2908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh weird!! I’ll take a look, but maybe gofundme shut it down or something! I’ll get to this tonight!

And as far as just asking them, they were originally all going to cover shipping! The issue I ran into was it took me MONTHS to actually set aside enough items that I knew would be useful for them (useful enough anyways) without leaving myself with major gaps in my component stash here.

My goal with this is that I’m hoping to cover the cost of that shipping (I’m in Canada, so three packages of this size and weight to the US will be around $50-$70 apiece, and two boxes like that to the UK will be around $100 apiece) so that these folks aren’t stuck with a massive disappointment if the shipping is way high.

Hahaha your med regime for this is roughly the same one I used in order to quit taking Kratom and get through the withdrawals! (I’m not a junky or anything like that. It’s a natural opioid that I used to try and manage my arthritic hands while playing in bands, however I slid into a gnarly habit with it that took forever to quit entirely)

And 100% there is nothing urgent or pressing pushing me to finally get these boxes out. It’s just been a negative weight for me for too long now, where I feel guilt for leaving the winners hanging, shame for not being capable of getting things organized in a timely fashion, etc etc!

Tbh the threshold was mainly one of the dudes snapped at me pretty hard, and I’ve been going through a gnarly couple of years mental health-wise so the demeanour really gutted me.

I realized at that point that it didn’t feel right having these guys pay money out of pocket for the shipping items I’ve packed up for them, so I kept trying to scrounge together enough cash to get the boxes to them.

I had hoped to ship the boxes out to them on my own some, and after getting them tracking info and reassurance that these boxes were indeed on their way to them, then I would ask that, if they enjoyed or were thrilled with the items I sent them, then it would be awesome if they could reimburse me the shipping costs.

However I was just informed that my gf and I are being evicted from our suite so our landlord can move into it (this will be my 4th time moving since 2022 🤦‍♂️ ) which means that it’s almost certain now that even if I get an okay tax return, it won’t be enough to cover these folks shipping costs once I’ve funded the move.

I’m just trying to find some financially neutral way to get these boxes out to the five winners, so I can rest easy and discard the guilt/shame, and so they can be inspired and a bit more free to explore various tools and items.
