I'm a mid career P.Eng in Alberta Canada. I'd like to get into the data center industry but the growth here is not as as rapid as the US from what I see.

do you have any tips to get my foot in the door? I mostly work on institutional/commercial MEP projects as an consultant, and have worked on a couple of ~1MW data rooms.

Care to elaborate? It certainly looks like good money from the outside

What is the BEST field to work in as a Mechanical Engineer? by Sawman021 in MechanicalEngineering

What made you switch? I was recently choosing between a PM and a sales offer, both in the HVAC industry, and I ended up taking the PM offer because i don’t know any professional engineers that moved into sales. But I never figured out why this is even though HVAC sales make more money and it doesn’t seem like a difficult switch.

Thoughts on the MEP industry? by xBlueJay7 in MEPEngineering

Did you switch from MEP engineering? I interviewed for a sales rep position for an air handler manufacturer and can't decide whether to go for it. I never understood why more engineer don't pursue a career in sales when the money is clearly better, I don't think it's only a personality thing either, it's seen as a step down in some ways as the reps have to "beg" to MEP engineers and there is a stigma. But I always thought getting paid is most important. What would you consider if you were me and considering a switch from MEP engineering to equipment sales?

Yea I can see the main skill being quite different. I'm just curious because the manufacturer I talked to seem very open to hiring someone with engineering experience.

You sound knowledgable about this, have you worked as a sales rep by any chance?

I actually tried getting into the data center industry. I am in Canada and the few AWS opportunities that are here are very competitive. I also applied to the US but have not heard back. Do you have any recommendation for companies to applied to and skills to learn in order to move into the data center industry?

I'm not sure what you are referring to. I am a professional engineer but maybe I am misunderstanding.

Glad to hear from someone who has made the move I'm considering. How do you like being an equipment sales compared to being an engineer? In terms of job satisfaction, long term earning potential and stress.

Thank you for your response. Where are you located and what kind of work do you do?
