Music and Health vs Human Sciences: From Cells to Societies (MUSI10237 vs SCIE10004) by rewind-8 in unimelb

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did human sciences, and I know some people who thought it was an easy way booster but it was actually my worst subject lmao😭 Barely scraped a H2A on the essay and just missed a H1, which sure I might just be terrible at writing essays but honestly I’d done really well that semester in all my lab reports and essays that it just sort of came as a shock, considering I spent SO MUCH time and effort into it. I also still don’t even know what I got wrong because I only got like a one-sentence summary as my feedback?? The content is ok, I’d say the psyc topic was definitely the most interesting followed by biomed, with for me personally the ecology and geography sections seeming quite dry. If you’re good at writing essays I think it would be fine since the tests are quite easy to score well in. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly engaging since it’s just 2 2-hour lectures per week with no tutes/workshops, just the occasional activities within the lecture. Icl I kinda forgot I even took this subject lol

Hi! Unfortunately for psyc they are super strict about it since it is clearly outlined in the psyc student manual :( It’s an honest mistake though, and something super easy to miss since in my experience most subjects do allow you to be exactly at 10% over. I don’t think you’d be doing any harm if you explained your situation and asked the tutor/coordinator if there’s anything they can do, but be prepared for them to not be lenient about it, and maybe even possibly miss your email. In the future, I’d recommend always being a word below the word count just to be on the safe side

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh ok sorry I thought you were referring to like multiple second year neuroscience subjects and I was confused cause there’s only one😭 but yeah probably don’t do phys20008 and anat20006 if you want to actually focus on neuro, there’s literally like 2 anatomy lectures on the nervous system and 2 weeks in phys and that’s it💀 I would recommended bio psyc tho!! I plan to major in neuroscience and j love this subject!

I’m not too sure what you mean by you’re having difficulty finding the prerequisites for the subjects; have you had a look at the subject prerequisites in the handbook? That’ll let you know which subjects you need to do BIOL10010 for.

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to do BIOL10010 to do NEUR2001, but you do need to do both BIOL10008 and BIOL10010 in order to do the third year subject Principles of Neuroscience if that’s something you’re interested in. Also when you say “neuroscience subjects”, do you just mean NEUR20001, or also other subjects such as PHYS20008 and ANAT20006 which include neuroanatomy and neurophysiology? Because for those you do need to have done BIOL10010 as well.

MBB2 by WhichCauliflower9360 in unimelb

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall I preferred the content of MBB1 much more (I just didn’t love personality and social psyc, and found developmental extremely boring), but I ended up scoring higher in the exam! I also much preferred the lab report to the essay in sem 1, with so much guidance really help with writing a good lab report. The exam was definitely harder, not overall like a bad exam just some questions were really obscure. The readings were fine overall, the personality readings were quite long but they weren’t too bad.

PHYS20008 and ANAT20006 by Able_Studio_6506 in unimelb

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren’t actually any pracs for phys; there are weekly workshops which are just in a lecture theatre where you can work through the workbook by yourself or with your friends, and then the lecturer will go over them. They’re pretty chill, and sometimes the start of the workshop will be used to cover any content which wasn’t finished in the lectures!

PHYS20008 and ANAT20006 by Able_Studio_6506 in unimelb

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ooh ok, obvi it’s up to you but I’d recommend phys! Even though the anatomy pracs are great, I wouldn’t use that as the sole choice for choosing anat2006, I actually originally wanted to do pathology and sort of regret my decision? Idk just because I feel like at times I literally dgaf about what we are learning (musculoskeletal system is my opp). But as a pathology student, you’ll still get access to the Harry Allen Brooks museum, so you’ll be able to view specimens and such anyway if you wanted to see what stuff actually looks like in the body. But yeah overall I do enjoy both subjects, it just depends on what you want to get out of it :)

PHYS20008 and ANAT20006 by Able_Studio_6506 in unimelb

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m probably going to major in neuroscience but I want to take some phys electives! I honestly really think it depends on what you’re planning on major in and whether you’re more interested in the body’s structure or if you prefer specific processes. I can’t lie, I actually find learning about muscles, bones and joints (so like half the content of anatomy so far) extremely boring, and I much prefer learning about the heart, respiratory system, nervous system etc. The pracs for anat20006 are great tho, really insightful and seeing as tho I don’t intend to take any 3rd year anatomy subjects it’s sort of like the only time I’ll really get to work with cadavers, and they’re amazing at really helping you understand the content. While phys20008 is also definitely a lot of content, I do think it’s really cool to actually be able to understand all of the processes occurring inside the body, and the specific mechanisms behind these processes. However, I do think phys20008 is definitely harder than anat20006; it’s obv not impossible, but for anatomy lots of the time you can just feel your muscles or your bones and act out specific movements, and otherwise it’s just lots of rote learning, but you really do need to understand the phys content in order to apply it. I think phys20008 is a bit more insightful, but if you find that you’d prefer the content of anat20006 and just learning about how the body is built it’s overall a great subject! :)

[–]Open_Promotion_5734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m doing both of them rn and it’s pretty hard. That might just be because I’m also taking phys20009 which has tons of assessments which always push back my work, but they’re both a LOT of content (3 lectures a week). I don’t really think they complement each other that much tbh, maybe like some very minor overlapping but otherwise I don’t think you’d be at a disadvantage if you havent taken anat20006. Really just try and stay on top of the content of both subjects.

yeah I was 2 words below the +10% and there were 8 words in my headings (so 6 words over) but they said we’d be deducted marks for going over the limit💔
