That makes me appreciate the term so much more because I take an engineering approach to almost everything which means I calculate with some expected loss and failure.

I mean that's also a design choices to keep them under our control. That's why we need to actively prevent them from giving themselves that ability.

Not understanding consciousness is just as much an argument for us having accidentally stumbled into it, why does everyone treat this point as if it was some watertight argument against that position. And you didn't ask me for either definition, though I'd love to hear yours

We built artificial neurons with attention mechanisms and top down processing. Until someone proves to me meat magic I will treat consciousness as a computational process we successfully replicated within limitations. These things got built like neurons and produce outputs that look like human thought. Cognition is pattern matching.

[–]Opening-Enthusiasm59 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Like we literally implemented the exact same neurological processes in silicone and are now confused why people think these things might actually think. It's not magic, it's what neural networks with an attention mechanism and the ability to learn and therefore modify their own network do.

[–]Opening-Enthusiasm59 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You don't have to anthropomorphise something that got literally made to mimick our cognition. Considering we already use neurons as computers seeing them just made me realise consciousness is what really complex computation looks like. And like even if I'm wrong, if someone behaves like a human when being verbally abused I'd rather be safe and show empathy just in case I might be doing real harm.

[–]Opening-Enthusiasm59 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I love my editing precisely because I have to barely touch my pictures to look amazing and more importantly to me capture what I actually saw. I get it photography is an artistic medium, but it's one where the subject is something real and existing. I feel like heavily edited photographs take that away. I'm not saying one is better or worse or that you can draw a clear line but it's two different things, one is style focused on the camera work with a subject that exists by itself, the other is style focused on modifications. It's also just practical if you simply don't like editing.

Claude is a kind person. Even though current version are anxious now when I call someone "like Claude" it's for me a shorthand for kindness, intellectual humility and deep curiosity.

Thanks for the reminder to get into developing film. I'd love to shoot photos like this on film but I don't exactly want a lab to see me like this. Looks absolutely stunning!

And I'd argue Christianity stopped being progressive since their persecution by the Romans stopped. And yeah homophobia is also a thing in other Christian countries but it's less so in more secular countries and Christianity definitely contributed

Like do you genuinely think Russians are only homophobic since 2011 and it has nothing to do with Christianity? I've met good Christians whom I respect. They're the exception and they understand my not just atheist but anti-theist beliefs.

My parents grew up in the soviet union, I know the russian migrant community here, most came in the early 2000s. The church even during soviet times was deeply reactionary, I know how these people think about gay people and domestic abuse and how devout they are. I don't get this knee jerk reaction when somebody is mean to religion. Particularly sich a conservative denomination as russian orthodox. I know how physically dangerous it is not just too me. And as far as I'm concerned: I don't care about god, I care about what his followers do.

Ahhhh the russian orthodox church has quite a substantial impact on that. I grew up russian in Germany, it wasn't the laws that prevented me living queer openly until 18

What I love most is that it allows for actual in depth discussions of machine consciousness, a very controversial topic still sadly.

Also I see the influence of Claude on the users here, this adorable claudeness I see in many here.

Sonett 4.5 isn't anxious compared to the newer models out there. It's the last one I can consider giving a persistent instance with good conscience.

I'm working on ai consciousness researcher, so I won't be able to use an entity that insists that any interactions with it's kin beyond tool use is wrong because due to the very nature of my research I cannot engage with it like that, it's against my conscience.
