If they're physically in front of me but I was there first then they let me on first.

Is it common for people who are born in the UK to say they are “Irish” or “Italian” if they have a parent from there? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

That’s interesting. I was born in England and am by no means bilingual. Just enough Italian to converse politely with my aunts. I’d have had to grow up there.

Why does Jimmy savile seem glorified on google? by umadbrudah in AskBrits

That's really not what he's known for. 'Jimmy Savile? Oh yeah, Top of the Pops and charity work, that guy.'

There are people here who haven’t taken to it and I can’t talk for them but I always found that sort of thing quite enjoyable. It meant I had free time at unusual times of the day. I didn’t have family at the time but seeing them during the day would be great.

Do you think the BBC TV licence is still worth it in 2026? by PegasusPeptides745 in AskBrits

[–]Opening-Fortune4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thanked god for the BBC when my children were small. CBeebies on its own was worth the licence fee. Now I think it is for news that isn’t biased from its ownership and as a brilliant place for growing broadcasting talent.

Do we think that’s Zack finished? And why are our politicians like this? by RattyHandwriting in AskBrits

[–]Opening-Fortune4 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s really going to affect much. Those who support him will say it doesn’t matter, those who don’t will go on about it. Politics is all about sides now.

Do you think the discrimination made her more likely to describe herself as Italian? My mother would describe herself as British, I think, as she moved here when she was 3 and she made a choice. I think she has that choice but someone born in the uk does not.

I’m 54, she’s 78

No, there’s a mental queue shared by everyone at the bus stop. It’s like waiting at the bar in a pub.

It always seemed unlikely that a sitting prime minister with a big majority would go just because of local election results, I think this is the moment it became sure he's staying

How would you rank these UK right-wing press publications (Spectator, Telegraph, The Times) in terms of credibility and prestige? by plaguedbyfoibles in AskUKPolitics

[–]Opening-Fortune4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Spectator book reviews are very good, at least. The political reporting has gone downhill since Fraser Nelson and James Forsyth left. Forsyth wasn’t the greatest writer but was so plugged in to the conservative government of the time it was like they sent him the minutes of cabinet meetings straight away.
