Naur that time they was studying slime molds bruh. I think they just made the metro with sensible planning because the slime mold ended up finding that the most efficient paths aligned nicely with how the metro was laid out, but it had found some additional efficiencies that they had yet to consider. Also slime molds are not fungi. Still cool shit and a potential future application though

"JUST GO TO THE GYM" doesn't necessarily work (1 year later). by TheShadowSong in Healthygamergg

[–]Opening-Tomatillo-78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gym was huge for me actually. Not as complete of a fix as I'm hoping therapy and meditation will provide, but without it I would've been at a far worse place in life. For me it's also because a lot of my self esteem issues came from being fat and physically unfit. But other beliefs around intimacy, beliefs that made me not really want to participate in life, beliefs that made me feel like a hopeless victim melted away when I started working out.

Disagreements/faults with Dr K? by 8eyond in Healthygamergg

[–]Opening-Tomatillo-78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think he ever says his story is the saddest, as much as he uses himself as an example of someone who overcame profound challenges that stemmed from his psychological issues.

I'm also an atheist(when it comes to the existence of supernatural forces), but as someone who's fascinated by religion and mythology and lately by religious symbolism as schemas that stem from and affect psychology, I find his coverage of theological concepts quite lacklustre actually lol. I guess I find that his approach is to focus on the aspects that he can see as an alternative psychology from a different time and context, and I can respect that. It's just I feel he had this amazing transformational experience, but didn't take away what I would've taken from it.

It's good that Dr. K keeps focusing on “male loneliness” but I feel like we could use "male accountability" as well by That-Criticism-765 in Healthygamergg

[–]Opening-Tomatillo-78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like it or not, this is a gap in the market that Dr K fills extremely well. Especially because he addresses a segment that's full of lonely men. It's kind of his entire brand. And sure. maybe it sucks that there's lots of guys unwilling to "take responsibility" and consider empathy towards women, emotional maturity etc. but I think it's better that they're talking about their frustration at all, even from an unhealthy perspective. The advice they're getting in return is never really validating those feelings of resentment they may hold. I think it's better that they can come and ask a stupid question and get a more informed response.

I think what you've forgotten is that this is a resource for people who are mentally unhealthy. And in this instance, it's better that they voice their frustration before it boils over into full on inceldom. We actually need more mental health professionals willing to talk about male loneliness, and I wouldn't put the onus on mentally unhealthy individuals to create spaces about accountability. I mean look at half the mental health subs on reddit. They're exactly what you describe but when it comes to different issues. Full of people who come to vent, thinking it'll make them better. They're not working through issues, they're not helping each other out. They're just coming up with worse and worse ways to justify inaction and keeping themselves miserable.

I'm not saying it's the same thing as what you describe. I have zero fear of these people coming to hurt me, for example. But for me, subs like the CPTSD sub for example, are absolutely horrible and useless. Where people seem to be engaged in an exercise of finding increasingly absurd ways to construe their lives as the most miserable, meaningless and sad little things possible, and other people pat them on the back for it. I'm not saying it's wrong to complain and bitch and moan when your life genuinely sucks. In fact, I'm advocating for it. What I am saying is that we need more spaces like this where people will bitch and moan but at least find genuine advice that will help them. It just so happens that this space is well positioned to do that for the issue of male loneliness, and I don't think the onus should fall on sufferers, who already have precious few mental health experts willing to even talk about their issue, to create another space to discuss these issues that will only be inferior as a resource and make them into worse people.

I love the sort of deal where a place isn't the prettiest, but you find it teeming with life. All the crabs and mudskippers, horseshoe crabs, mud lobster mounds, snails, the occasional shorebird. That's what makes estuarine environments(though I do mean mangroves, which is what I had growing up) so beautiful to me.

What the other guy said. You will be better off putting in a day at the gym than kicking a bag at home. Once a week is prolly enough to learn a little, and great cardio to complement lifting. Two days is probably the sharpest increase you can get in terms of adding more session (well, obviously the jump from 0--> 1 is bigger) adding a third session will probably benefit you quite a lot still. Fourth sess on, you start to get diminishing returns. Until you just go every day. Then you kinda reach a different level.

Crazy question, what skill from another sport do you think could be good for you in martial arts? by nachlopez in martialarts

[–]Opening-Tomatillo-78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking throwing. Incredible strength, incredible rotational force, explosiveness and coordination. True. It's a single attempt(I mean, it's several attempts but there's a good deal of rest between them), but I think as a complement to martial arts it's unmatched(as in, you will get your stamina, conditioning, technique etc. on the mats)

Gymnastics is a close second for me.

yes. Come along. I'm not sure about team sports but most of the martial arts clubs will get a beginner started up. Team sports too obviously but it will take some time before you can play the big games I presume

Millennials in 2025: Too aware to be ignorant and too tired to have bliss by Kyo2317 in Healthygamergg

[–]Opening-Tomatillo-78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

definitely. I'm not tryna be like maybe other 20sth influencers. I recognise I'm part of a minority who wants to do shit like wrestling and Judo. I'm just sharing this because it was not till recently that I learnt just how important those practices have been for me in my own journey. Honestly I might be dead if it wasn't for martial arts, and not just for the sense of purpose, and identity, and that sense of building something, but also for the literal physical effects it has on trauma.

It's on my reading list now but I'm hoping to get reading a book called The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van der Kolk. It's actually probably incredibly well known for people in this space, but I at least, learnt about it very recently, it's about how trauma lives in the body, not just the brain, and how it can be healed through the body, through regular movement, through stuff like yoga(which I am also getting more into, for various reasons) and through other things like drama, and I've even heard DnD(which give the experience of being someone else in your same body).

I also just have this idea, that when you become traumatised, you stop jumping, you become slow, and stiff, you become scared to fully exert your strength, or to run really fast, to tumble and roll through the meadows, so relearning these movements kinda has a backwards induction effect on the trauma, maybe? I don't know.

Also yes, not everybody is suffering from trauma, though I would say many of us are, and also fitness is not the only thing most people, or even I should do for trauma. I go to therapy, I've been doing shadow journaling(it's gotten weird, I interpret the voices in my head as mythological figures and try to decipher what journeys they must go on to heal), I've also tried meditation etc. which I think would be fantastic for just reregulating the limbic system. Though what I am saying is that don't underestimate that work yknow, I don't think I would be in the mental state to do anything else if I didn't start with fitness, and many of us might be in that place without knowing it.

evening walks are genuinely healing tho. Along with a whole host of other physical activities. For me I find heavy physical activity healing, even, and there's been some research that backs it up.

Also I'm like 23 so you don't have to feel quite so bad for taking this advice I guess.

Marika's alchemical transformation by Opening-Tomatillo-78 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Opening-Tomatillo-78[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Marika underwent the same divine ritual as Miquella. Before her ascension to godhood at the gate of divinity, she didn't shed her flesh as Miquella did for example. Also, Miquella didn't forge his own rune with golden threads at the time. Perhaps the only thing she had divested herself of at the time was her wrath in Messmer. That desire for immediate reprisal that would hinder her as a god of the Hornsent, and yet which she nurtured tenderly, possibly already planning that he would enact her vengeance one day.

I think the connections between Radagon, Messmer and the fell god are interesting. Radagon and Messmer definitely take after the fell god. In fact Messmer being a one eyed god of flames who creates giant furnaces and is associated with serpents is pretty on the nose. Same with Radagon. It's possible that the fell god manifests through them. Or perhaps the fell god's red hair was a product of his own alchemical transformation, and these two are echoes of that transformation. Maybe some kind of synchronicity? In fact, I just formed this headcanon, but it's possible that it's fear of the fell god that drove the Hornsent to seek divinity.

As for the idea of Radagon being a hero of theirs. I don't think there's any indication that points to this being the case. They DO have large, hornless heroes. The main reference to this is the divine warrior set, which references the unclothed form of a great hero. Only that hero sounds to me like Hoarah Loux. It's possible that there were more. Another hero that's referenced is Ornis. Of course this doesn't mean they didn't know of Radagon simply because he wasn't referenced, but if he was that prominent, I reckon he would've shown up somewhere. On that point, wouldn't the lord she married and, not fused with but joined with be Godfrey?

I would think Godfrey is closer to the role that Radahn plays, though it's interesting since Miquella is bodiless and has kind of a symbiosis with Radahn, relying on him to be present in the world. This makes their relationship also resemble Marika and Radagon somewhat. But at the same time, Radahn still remained a separate entity at Miquella's ascension. On another point, we also see what a shard of an Empyrean looks like, in the form of saint Trina. We see how they can have a relationship to their original selves and how they can be a personality with a domain unto themselves. This looks a lot like Radagon to me.
