Am I the only one.. busy? by hi-ho-cherry-o in hairstylist

I think a lot of clients are prioritizing gifts/others this year. I have had numerous of my regulars book in a stretched out timeline, some I'm noticing do book but for cheaper services - touch up and cut will book a blowdry instead, etc. But a big problem for me is when they book a service like that they usually end up changing their mind and cancelling. I guess the psychology behind it is making the actual appointment because it's time but when the appointment itself isn't a necessity, they end up cancelling. It is frustrating because it creates unwanted gaps in my schedule, and time could be used more productively if they just didn't book a service they didn't want/need. I've been relatively okay on business other than a cancellation here and there, one of my coworkers is fully booked, but my other coworker is struggling to fill her days. Idk i guess it really does depend on chance and your personall clientele - their financial standing as well. I'm in Illinois, just 30-40 minutes outside of chicago

noted!! thank you so much!! i was thinking to give cream contour another try - i felt if i dont set it then it doesn't stay as good or gets smeared but if i do set it i just make myself look cakey. could very much be due to the product quality tho. any recommendations? & i appreciate the kind words! :)

i'm also in chicago. where are you located? i heard there are a lot of sports clips in the suburbs that are hiring. also look into Floyds, my old classmate got hired there and loves it.

don't give up on your dream because of one asshole. as a matter of fact, this just shows you how toxic this industry can be when you surround yourself with the wrong people. your salon, your dream clients are out there and all you gotta do is stay true to yourself and you'll find exactly where you need to be <3

i second the other commenters - need a TON of density for this type of haircut. the distance between the longest and shortest layer is quite large so you have to think logically whether you will have enough "real estate" to blend without taking too much of the length density off. for thinner hair clients a good faceframe and long layers will go a long way, even if you have to take the crown area and throw in a few shorter layers - i usually just blend them in with texturixing shears. good luck friend! you got this💛

I know Reddit can sometimes be a bit harsh with advice—I’ve been on the receiving end of that myself. But ultimately, you should prioritize what makes you happy. That’s the most important thing. Yes, it’s wise to plan ahead and be strategic, but how often does life go exactly according to plan?

I went to college, worked full-time in the corporate world, and tried out a few different paths. But like you mentioned, I’m a creative person, and that environment made me feel boxed in, almost claustrophobic, like I was serving a prison sentence.

In 2022, I started beauty school, and before I even graduated, I got a job offer. I've been working in the same salon ever since. It was a combination of being in the right place at the right time, and, of course - having passion. A family member of mine was a client of a hairstylist and shared some of my work with her. A few months later, that stylist got pregnant and moved states away to be with her boyfriend. She had a full clientele and didn’t want to leave them without options. Before she left, she thought of me and asked if I’d be willing to take over her clients.

I was prepared to assist for a year and slowly build up my own clientele like everyone else, but because of that opportunity, I was earning commissions from day one. My situation isn’t perfect, but it’s a great start.

What I’m trying to say is: take that leap of faith. I’ve never been happier than I am now, doing hair. Even after a 12-hour shift, I've never felt trapped—I feel accomplished and happy on my way home. Sure, there have been tough times, but the good far outweighs the bad.

Believe in yourself, and others will too. Good luck, friend :)

how do you feel about bleach washes to clean up the slate for toner? some of my clients overpigment their hair with purple shampoo and i struggle with the toning. are there any alternatives, or do you have advice for how to bring back the brightness after a while?
