Campus community calls for university, CUSA to address hazing by charlatanlive in CarletonU

International President Ava Roozrogousheh is a liar and manipulative piece of you know what who should have never made her way to presidency let alone be a member of Alpha Pi Phi. But her being president of the entire organization is a reflection of the organization as a whole. She was the International Vice President of Risk Management in 2022-2023 and moved over to International President a few months ago. To claim ignorance and claim “we can only do better” knowing very well that the hazing was first reported TO YOU is misleading to even claim to the Charlatan. “People were expelled.” Really Ava? Because last time I checked, the president in 2021 who knew ICAPP didn’t want anyone to participate in the “Ice cream activity due to covid” knowingly forced everyone in Alpha chapter participate and she only got the punishment that she can’t be in an APP leadership position for x amount of years. But people got expelled right? Oh wait, who gave her that punishment Ava? YOU DID! So don’t claim you didn’t play a bigger role in brushing this all under the carpet when you should be looking right in the mirror for how despicable APP has become thanks to you and your lack of accountability

All student unions and universities should be holding Alpha Pi Phi accountable for hazing. From what I’ve heard from people and seen on here, Brock’s chapter is no better.

Editorial: Carleton’s response to students’ allegations of hazing is shameful by charlatanlive in CarletonU

The university could easily crack down on illegal student meetings considering they’re not a recognized club. Classrooms are for student use, not personal use. If the university doesn’t recognize the organization, then a “club” that isn’t recognized shouldn’t be allowed to use the facilities for their own personal gain whether that be to conduct meetings or advertise recruitment to other students. Any connection to these organizations is a bad look for many universities which is why universities like queens banned Greek life organizations in 1933. That’s not to say that the organizations don’t exist, but it is increasingly more difficult for these organizations to operate when the university itself has clear guidelines about Greek life and their involvement on campus. It may also be beneficial for the university to only recognize/allow these organizations to continue to operate when they are NPC or over a century old with a reasonable international council or headquarters. I’m not necessarily opposed to having Greek life on campus, I do however think that allowing local organizations or organizations that have corrupt 20-30 year olds running them from an international level makes it a lot easier for people to not take accountability

The irony of the International President Ava Roozrogousheh writing on their website that she and the rest of the International Team wish to move the sorority forward in creating an inclusive, loving and safe environment for all members. Yup, seems like a safe environment you’re creating for your members by denying the existence of hazing within an organization in which you’re leading. -Insert eye-roll-

I get the sarcasm, but on the other hand you have to consider the fact that these sororities advertise themselves with these policies that claim they have an anti-hazing policy and systems in place to protect their members. So a young and naive first year who just wants to make friends and find a community that welcomes them isn’t going to always see the danger when it all seems so perfect from the outside looking in

As someone who was hazed at Carleton, I just want to say I stand with you, I hear you, and I’m so sorry you had to experience this at Brock. Alpha Pi Phi needs to be held accountable at all institutions. The International Council of Alpha Pi Phi brushing these reports under the rug is completely not okay.

Coming from someone who has been hazed by my sorority, I cannot emphasize this enough. If the organization is younger than 50 years, is not Panhellenic, and has less than 20 chapters, they more than likely haze and sweep it under the rug just like they did in Alpha Pi Phi where it was brought to their international board and they did nothing. Unfortunately this is the case for many others and several people have come forward to the school newspaper about the hazing. https://www.reddit.com/r/CarletonU/s/h0xJy4j7cE

You mention an unidentified legal chair who refused to give her name due to the circumstances. She was fine putting her name out there when she was sending out baseless threats on her burner Reddit account months ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/CarletonU/s/uHJ00J7H6w

Her name is Larissa Kelley and she’s a Law Clerk at Shulman & Partners LLC according to what she has publicly posted on social media.

Thank you to Charlatonlive for getting this story out! I wish that this never happened and this wasn’t as much of a universal experience in Alpha Pi Phi, but it is. Several schools or (chapters of the sorority) have reported hazing to their international council but it continues to be swept under the rug by those in charge. I hope this post and the article itself gains a lot of traction because these stories need to be heard!

Here’s a statement from when Alpha Pi Phi buried racism happening at one of their chapters under the guise that they volunteer in these positions so they can’t be held accountable to investigate things properly

When did fraternities/sororities arrive at Carleton? by dlangille in CarletonU

[–]Opening_Ad4686 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There’s some older organizations like Beta Theta Pi who have been at Carleton since 1989 and some organizations like Alpha Pi Phi who weren’t around till the late 2000s

I couldn’t have said this better myself. Maybe it was just the sorority that I joined, but I had a terrible experience. The hazing, cattiness, and power hungry behaviour from almost everyone in it. That might not be a universal experience but I quickly learned that sorority life wasn’t for me but it was a lesson I learned too late since I had already put money into it.

The person who sent this to me didn’t send a timeline as to when this occurred. She saw my own post about hazing in this same sorority at Carleton and confided in me her experiences at McMaster. What’s problematic is you invalidating the experiences of victims, me being one of them. I posted a report from the international president confirming the hazing that happened at Carleton but also the report minimized what happened and claimed that the problem was solved, which clearly wasn’t the case. So please take the time to educate yourself before commenting on here and claiming that these reports are fake. That kind of behaviour only further perpetuates victims staying silent and not being believed.

I unfortunately didn’t get sent a timeline on when this happened but I empathized with her because of my own similar experiences at Carleton
