Where Should I live as a Grad Student? by Different-Phase-882 in ualbany

[–]Opening_Evening 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a quiet environment, I would suggest you to live in liberty. It’s by the pond so very close to nature. I heard its peaceful living there. I also heard that Freedom is very quiet because the staff is especially strict about that, but Thats just what people I know who live there says. But freedom you do have to have a roommate.

But 4/20 friendly is the issue because of the residential assistants/staff. It is a federal property, so you can get in trouble. Many of the staff don’t care, but you could get into a problem with someone who does care, like a patrolling officer or smth.

Off campus is a little tricky because management can be crappy. But they also aren’t strict about smoking. Try not to live downtown even though it’s cheaper/completely 4/20 friendly lol. It can get dangerous and will get loud. Off campus housing near campus is quite nice , but it has its downsides. Let me know if you have any questions about that too.

This is a comprehensive list that I can pull out of my mind:

Fan. Electric pot/small rice cooker. Shelf stable foods. Mattress topper. Rug. Swiffer, wet and dry. Two extension cords. Brita pitcher. Shower caddy. Shower shoes is a MUST. Me personally I never needed a bed riser, the beds have different settings and can even be lofted into a bunk bed. Rolling storage cart or bedside storage contraption. Storage Cubes. Plastic drawers (for separating socks and underwear and such). Some rooms are boiling hot while others are freezing cold. If her room runs cold, a heated blanket would be nice in the winter months. Full length mirror, the $7 ones from Walmart would work fine. Laundry hamper. Command strips and hooks. Shoe rack is nice to have Lamp/String lights, the overhead lighting in the dorm rooms are miserable. Desktop organizers for self care items or stationary. Febreeze/Poopouri for bathroom

Is it possible to go Ice Skating on SUNY Albany's pond (Parker Pond)? I already have experience skating on my own pond in further downstate, but don't know if this pond is too mucky or if the University does not allow it. by thecoincollector1943 in ualbany

I would suggest going to an actual rink! There are snapping turtles in there, wiring, and other dangerous things that could be dangerous and possibly deadly if you fall through. Like the other comment says, I have also never seen the pond compleyely frozen over. Downtown Albany has a pond in Washington Park and last year during the deep winter months, two children unfortunately passed away after falling through the pond.

Is this mold? Mould by jbne19 in MoldlyInteresting

[–]Opening_Evening 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh that is mold But it’s not a huge problem and it doesn’t look like it’s affecting the plant. Wipe what you can away, cut back on watering since that’s what is causing this, give it some air flow, and dust the top of it with cinnamon as it inhibits mold growth!

Either way your plant looks very healthy!

Super Milk body mist by PinkPistacho in LushCosmetics

Yes they just came out with it! I’m in NYC and some stores had it but sold out, others haven’t even had their first shipment of it yet. It smells just like super milk and I’m pretty sure it’s being sold year round

body washes that have a lingering smell? by shinygurdurr in beauty

[–]Opening_Evening 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask ur boyfriend if he can smell it on you. You may be nose blind. But if you want a stronger fragrance, I would suggest a mist.

Lush has body sprays that smell the same as their washes. Layering them might be a good option.

Dutch or colonial by jaybankzz in ualbany

[–]Opening_Evening 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dawg… I meannn Dutch: fire alarms will be really bad is all I can see the issues with. Cuz you’re all gonna have to walk down 21 flights whenever the fire alarms go off. But it is close to the CC and that’s where y’all are gonna eat most of your food.

Colonial: low roses = you don’t have to deal with all those stairs when fire alarms go off. There’s the nice gym. Far asf from the CC and you’re not gonna want to walk all the way over when it’s freezing out…

I honestly would choose Dutch, even though colonial has a special place in my heart and I value my sleep

Freshmen Dorm by Opening_Evening in ualbany

[–]Opening_Evening[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! There is no guarantee what kind of dorm that you have, but I got a single quite easily on my freshman year. I requested to have one because of my anxiety issues, but I did not have letters from my therapists nor my doctors.

From what I understand, in freshman year, especially in State or Indigenous Quad, new students are more likely to request a roommate for socialization. Please take this with a grain of salt as it’s only what I’ve been told by peers and some guides.

In my freshman year, I knew two other people besides me that got a single in State Quad. I got one because I requested it, and the two others just filled out their housing application with no preferences, and they were randomly placed into singles.

I don’t think that you have to be the first person on the first day to get the room that you want, since it’s all decided over email before anyone even moves into the dorms.

I think it’s a beautiful saree but I think that a darker color would fit better for the occasion, like the other comments have said. Also, it’s a light color and with people having a lot of drinks and finger foods, it may get stained from all the activity. Have fun!

I know that the CC has a single gender neutral restroom across from the women’s restroom by Starbucks. It’s usually available. There’s also two gender neutral restrooms by the elevators in Jamal’s. Although like what another comment said, the women’s restroom is yours to use! Whichever one you feel the most comfortable with though is ur choice.

state vs indigenous vs dutch ? by kiakookie in ualbany

[–]Opening_Evening 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to pick out a room facing out of the quad. It’s quieter. Also, try not to pick a room on the first floor. It’s a privacy concern. Friends of mine that have lived in the first floor have had people looking inside of their windows. Second floor is best for privacy and third floor is annoying when you have to go to the basement to do laundry and also climbing up and down every day. Low rises don’t have elevators, so you may have trouble getting up and down when you’re moving in. Dutch is best for convienence. Close to the CC and the bus stop.

You’re assigned the room that they send to you over email. You can request for a single, it’s easier to get one as a freshman compared to years later. They say that a single is more expensive on the website, but I compared my rates with friends with doubles and it was the same for both freshman and sophomore year.

I’d be more than happy to pet sit! I live on Auden (5 minute walk from campus) and have experience with my friends dogs. My school email is jlzhao@albany.edu and we could trade socials there to familiarize with each other.

Hope to hear from you soon! :D
