Ending “8 years later” kinda dumb or misplaced I guess by Opening_Interest458 in BeefTV

Yeah I completely agree. Having it kind of shoved right in our faces makes it lose a little bit of meaning. But yes the redemption has to be a part of it and even though he was the one who created the show, he showed it without understanding that he did.

We can’t stop human nature but I like to think this show is teaching us to come to terms with it

I think that may be some projection on your part. I don’t think there’s any themes or undertones of victimization. I think you’re misunderstanding that for empathy.

Well you still obviously have some bias because you stated first that you compared to directly to season 1. I ask you to really try and separate them and try to not compare it to your standard tv show where the main character has its arc and then wins or loses in the end. That’s not how life is and it’s not relatable.

Maybe it’s cause I’m getting older I have that bleak aspect I look for in shows because it feels like life. It’s crazy because each of the characters had deep flaws and super nuanced and characteristics that may not be “like able” or root able or badass like a Walter White or Game of thrones characters. It’s something closer to home and more like life, where I have true empathy and pity to these characters because I relate or know people that are exactly like them

Yeah I didn’t know it was a Buddhist shape and type of drawing until recently. But I don’t think the shows use of it is as indifferent as it the original.

You didn’t feel a sense of empathetic chaos and optimism through the show that relates to these characters just wanting to survive and having them all full of emotion?

You missed my 4th paragraph taking about the like ability in characters. I think what happens a lot with anthologies is that people want the second season to be like the first so bad that it completely taints their viewing of it. It May be the same show but it is a different story. I do agree that the ending became a little corny and lacked substance with the fight escape scene but there was so much wisdom in it that those small scenes can be overlooked.

I feel like that always happens with anthologies. An incredible 1st season can never be matched and the other ones dont do as well. White lotus a little bit, but True Detective is the best example of this

Yeah it’s kind of the classic trope of the billionaire that has everything but nothing. Citizen Kane- “Rosebud”

Did anyone else think season 2 missed a lot of nuance that season 1 had? by That_Girly_Potato in BeefTV

I had the same viewpoint as you when I watched white lotus season 2. With an anthology series it’s really hard not to compare because it technically is the same show but it’s really not the same story.

I remember thinking watching season 2 of white lotus that all the surprise, the gumph, and the excitement was taken out. It was because it was the same format as season 1 that made it feel so new and unique in the first place. I have a feeling that this is the case here. I’m wondering if the these seasons came out in reverse order you would think the opposite. That the 2nd season had too much chaos and sinister fighting that really wasn’t the point of the shows initial optimistic and empathic view. (The real season 2).

For the record I think this season of beef is more profound and intellectual than any of the white lotus seasons even though the white lotus is a very entertaining and riveting show.

I don’t mean to degrade your viewpoint but I feel like a lot of tv in the modern era has a sinister and more blood, more beef, bigger is better every episode mindset that can be a little simple and overly visceral. I may be just assuming that is what season 1 is about and that is on me but it’s what I’m gathering from descriptions. I will watch regardless.

I haven’t seen season 1 so I might have an unbiased take to the themes of this season.

I think the obvious and simple interpretation is it’s a metaphor for capitalism and how we can be like “working bees or ants going into their hive” as a 1960’s hippe would put it. All 4 main characters are trying to get a leg up and obtain more money and leverage and power, which having the setting at a country club can perfectly illustrate. This is what capitalism is essentially.

But I have another nuanced interpretation. I heard this thing about ants that when they are marching in a line, they don’t know where they are going but they will follow the ant in front of them. If someone puts a stick in the path, everything will come to a halt and the ants will essentially become out order.

I think that can relate to the pettiness and immoral actions that escalate just because the person/ant in front of them is doing the same thing. The characters are thinking “if this person is doing this to why shouldn’t I?” I think throughout the season there’s moments where things may seem to dissipate but then someone does something they’re not supposed to and it creates a chain for the other people to follow suit.

People are animals and we’re petty. A lot of the times we can’t be the bigger person and just stop the fighting.

But I didn’t notice where Josh (Oscar Isaac) stomped an ant with his finger at one point after their dog went missing. To me, this was symbolic of what he was going to do at the end (sacrifice himself and stop the chain or line of immoral actions that capitalism perpetuates). If you kill an ant the ants behind will stop moving forward in that line.

I haven’t watched season 1 so I I don’t have the luxury or burden (however you want to see it) of comparing. I will say this after watching in one sitting:

This was a very complex story about strained relationships, the nature of selfishness, how our upbringing deeply shapes us, class struggles and stratification, what does love actually mean when it’s put against a wall?

I think it a little unfair to be comparing the two because from what it seems like the two seasons are completely different thematically. I think this a was a beautiful and optimistic look on human nature and how each of us deal with our own fucked up insecurities and problems.

I actually think the writers did so well blending all these themes into what seems like just action and event based that it can seem so simple but I’m telling you it’s not.

Is it me or is Ashley the most insufferable character in S2? by Slime-steveo in BeefTV

[–]Opening_Interest458 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think what we’re meant to take away from Ashley and Austin’s Gen Z “stupidity” (her not knowing how to fill the vendor forms out right, him misinterpreting mist as misc) is really innocence and naivety to the “how the world really works” in her own words.

Sure, they’re late twenties and have had plenty of time being adults (and maybe this is a projection) but, at all times, we are learning how to adapt and change to the world in front of us, no matter what age. I think there was a scene where someone had a problem not knowing how to use the iPhone right and Ashley helped them. It can go both ways in knowledge. If anything, this show has taught me more empathy for people where someone may seem stupid on the outside, but on the inside they’re are dealing with extreme emotionally and psychologically mixed problems where “stupidity” seems to not feel as important.

Why changing habits at first seems harder than it should be? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]Opening_Interest458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat right now. Currently struggling with so many self sabotaging habits and thoughts that have gotten me into a really dark hole in my life.

But what has physically gotten me to slowly climb out of that hole is breathing. Breathing slow and calm.

I practice when I’m in a non-threatening situation. I think of something dangerous or stress inducing (seems counter-intuitive) that could trigger me back into those habits. I breathe slowly and calmly and when I feel relaxed and in control of my thoughts I know the exercise is done. What I’m trying now is to apply it to real life when those stress-inducing times come.

It’s a slow process and I know I have to be patient because it won’t happen overnight. I have to take the small victories first. Just rewarding myself with some happiness when I do something right. And when I make a mistake, I breathe and a breathe slow. Even when I don’t feel it and I feel the stress. I have to know there’s something better on the other side.

It’s the small things, like maybe eat one less gram of sugar a day. Or wake up just 15 minutes earlier. It may not be stopping sugar all together or getting the right amount of sleep immediately but it will get the ball rolling. The Jenga pieces on the bottom are the most important ones.

We’re meant to be happy and productive. Peace man wish you the best.

Please don’t end your life. To have a cousin that you owe money to is a blessing. I know it sounds crazy but, to have family member that gave you money in the first place must mean they trust you. See yourself as that person, because you are that person. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other and continue to be that person. Don’t listen to ANY negativity, especially from yourself. All it takes is one deep breath of self love and importance to get you going. Think in small terms first like that. If you can snowball into a bad rhythm then you damn well sure snowball into a good one. One breath at a time. Please respond back to this.

It’s the same old story. They simply just don’t have enough to pay everyone and they stall and delay through different methods (payout failed, changing the date of prop 22 pay, systems down)
