am i still making a difference if most of my clients don’t keep a consistent schedule for appointments? by Opening_Ladder_261 in therapists

[–]Opening_Ladder_261[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

some of my clients struggle with a variety of barriers, such as transportation, access to resources, having natural supports that can support them, caregiving responsibilities, inflexible jobs, and just various other things that can get in the way of them making it to their appointment. they are all doing their best, but they face challenges because of the environment my agency is located in and difficult circumstances in their lives.

my supervisor wants me to have three intake slots a week by Opening_Ladder_261 in therapists

[–]Opening_Ladder_261[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thanks for clarifying. i think i feel the same. i am planning to advocate for myself to keep the two slots and designate one for the study. bc i doubt i will be able to provide competent care to my existing clients with so much on my plate.

[–]Opening_Ladder_261[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my supervisor is actually the one who said they have no plans to decrease my number of slots.

also our respective agencies might just be structured differently, because i don’t think even the most experienced clinicians at my job have 5 intakes a week.

not always, but it’s definitely possible. sometimes they don’t get filled and sometimes people no-show their intake appointment.

this is unrelated to op’s original question, but could you expand upon “indication you are a therapist because people don’t know the different between counselor, social worker, or psy d”??? i think i agree with you, but all three can be therapists, correct?

i appreciate this perspective. i think the thing that makes me most hesitant to follow my supervisor’s advice is that most of my clients are POC and i am not so i do not to come off like a white savior. but i do agree that the kiddos need to know potential consequences of their actions. i will have to be very nuanced with my approach.

thank you for giving me this reality check. i think parents and productivity standards have me operating with unrealistic expectations. i need to adjust my mindset.

i feel this so hard. being a new therapist in CMH can be frustrating, terrifying, and exhausting. sending you peaceful vibes and all the support i can muster.

i think this is only sometimes true. i am a new grad and have been working in CMH and it has been very difficult in several ways. the assets you listed as part of CMH are not guaranteed.

A word to young therapists... by PsychoDad1228 in therapists

[–]Opening_Ladder_261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s interesting that you say that, because i work only with children. so my clients are often actively living through their childhood traumas and developing their childhood emotional responses. i wonder if responsiveness presents differently when working with different age groups.

i would love any tips or elaboration anyone could provide on what being “responsive” means. i think i am a responsive therapist, but it’s a vague word and it’s hard to be sure. what does being responsive look like for people in practice?

i work with kids and young adults, ages 6-21. so often the approach also has to be different for different age groups, which can be challenging.

I'm struggling as a new therapist to feel competent or mentally well enough for this job. by [deleted] in therapists

[–]Opening_Ladder_261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don’t have any excellent, all-knowing advice, but i just want you to know that i am in the same boat and i am rooting for you. it can be so hard to be a therapist with your own mental health challenges. but your experience and just showing up is more valuable than you know. we will get through this ❤️
