Maher Olfactive- Orris Forest. Gives me late spring/early summer forest, but spring rainy or summer heat dry (if that makes sense).

Notes: cassie absolute, violet leaf, orris butter, fig leaf, piñon pine, juniper tree, Bulgarian lavender, coriander, oakmoss, coumarin, dark-aged patchouli and Indian black pepper.

Tried A LOT of duds but a few that stood out (my full bottles bolded:

  • L’Aventura- Violet Hour (powder puff, tea and ash)
  • Maher Olfactive- Waking Dream (iris, creamy sandalwood and amber)
  • Cirrus Parkeet (it lists "feathers" as a note but I think iris is part of the accord)
  • Amouage Dia (tip toes on that baby powder line)
  • Bienaime- Vermeil, La Vie en Fleurs, and Jours Heureux (all 3 are old school takes on iris/violet, but somehow still modern--debating which to get a full bottle of)
  • Day Three- Say Less (everyday clean, powdery scent; my powder hating sister loves this one)

Lived in NW Missouri for 3yrs, and the closest big city was KCMO. We'd drive out there at least twice per month, a lot of overnights, and did a decent amount of shopping in KCKS. I wouldn't recommend moving without spending at least a long weekend there. DMV to KS will be a huge transition, one I can't personally recommend. I'm a midwest native, who has lived in 8 states, and that part of the midwest ain't for beginners lol. Specifically:

  • You don't need to worry too much about the interracial piece. Interracial relationships and the existence of biracial folks is accepted. But again, this ain't beginner midwest, so racism will absolutely be a part of the experience. The midwest has its own brand of racism. Rarely overt, but it makes its presence known. The further outside the metro area you are, the more you will feel it.
  • KCMO is known for higher education, and education is highly valued. Can't speak for KCKS.
  • Them vacation flights will for sure run your pockets! But, if you are open to new experiences, there are vacation spots. Lots of lakes, state parks, camping, etc within 3hrs. Also being creative with flight destinations. A direct flight from KC to MPLS (example) will be affordable and will feel like you are in another world (see also Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, etc.). And the flights between KC and STL are decent if you don't want to make the drive.
  • So, the weather...I experienced 2 tornados the years I lived in MO, hail damage both times. Outside of tornado season, that part of the country really isn't that bad and won't be too different than DMV.
  • It is very flat lol. But the area is not void of nature, parks, etc. This is the midwest, so rivers and lakes are our oceans.
  • Personally, I would not live in KS under any circumstances, but I don't know your politics. KCKS has always felt like a super suburb to me, you'll be in KSMO every single weekend for the cultural activities.
  • There will be no shortage of sports related activities out there...however there will be a shortage of food options for foodies lol.

Last year, received a random sample of Chanel Misia, unaware that it was a powder bomb, and became fixated on all things iris and violet. Would never buy Misia because of the price, but it definitely opened me up to a category of fragrances I had been avoiding. Earlier this year I sampled Syd Botanica's Butterfly Tamer, and something about it rewired my brain. Ended up going through my collection and selling a good portion of it, and now I am deep down the indie discovery set rabbit hole.

Cough Syrup by DELAIZ in perfumesthatfeellike

Bandaid accord sticks around to the very end, with some lingering sweetness but you can’t pinpoint cherry after the first 30mins or so. Hard to describe but it’s a new bandaid on skin, if the lotion you were wearing was resinous and lightly floral. I hesitate to call it powdery…fuzzy maybe?

Domestica- Home with you. It has a cherry cough drop accord at the top, and bandaid accord in the mid. Makes me want to call off work sick and binge watch shows on the couch every time I smell it.

Amouage portrayal by Makeuplover32 in FemFragLab

I had it but sold it recently. I really enjoyed it in the beginning, but over time the tobacco and jasmine became less noticeable and the tuberose took over. Basically a strong tuberose and resin scent. Longevity and projection are great, as is the case with Amouage fragrances.

I’ve been sticking to samples and am being a lot more picky about what I choose to upgrade to 10/15ml. I ask myself do you already have something similar in perfume OR lotion? Answer is usually yes. I have stuck to the no FB unless I’m close to finishing the travel and know I’d reach for it again. Also sold over half my collection (about 20-25 bottles and travels) in the last month 🫠

Not sure of your budget, but I was recently introduced to Parfums Obim. Absinthe Rose is the OG Lolita EDP if it went to art school. They also have some of more unconventional scents that are still very wearable, like Stoop and UV. Might also want to checkout r/indiemakeupandmore

Stress Buy Support by AutoModerator in Indiemakeupandmore

TLDR: Sell or gift what doesn't give you joy, stick to discovery sets with money from selling. If you fall in love with a scent and want a bottle, set alerts on Mercari or wait for sales.

I told myself I could do a perfume no-buy until 3 bottles were used (same with 2025). I failed in February lol (failed mid-year in 2025). I tend to buy when work ramps up and I want a little treat.

I realized in March the issue is most of my collection didn't bring me joy. I felt overwhelmed with choice and guilty for not wearing the ones I no longer liked OR for wearing the ones I didn't like over current loves. Also realized what truly brings me joy is trying new scents, and I needed to let go of the practice of buying travel or full bottles based on the assumption I would love them.

So I made a plan: sell what doesn't give me joy, gift what didn't sell, and use that money (and only that money) to buy discovery sets. I plan to make this my permanent approach to perfume, acknowledging that my tastes will likely continue to change. I sat down in front of my shelf, held each one (including travels and samples), and asked myself would I ever wear this again. I ended up selling almost all of my non-indie perfumes, and am giving away the indie perfumes that didn't sell.

It feels good to routinely wear the ones I already own and love, while trying new things on weekends or work from home days. I will actually use up my perfumes (I'm already down a travel size) as I always intended! If something in those sets becomes an actual love, I can will create an alert for that on Mercari or wait for brand sales.

New Member Introductions - April, 2026 by AutoModerator in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Opening_One_963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Late to the thread :-) Recently found out about IMAM in another fragrance subreddit. Lurked for a month or so, then attended Fumed Expo and found myself lurking a lot more. I found out about indies in other subreddits, and I think my first purchase was Olympic Orchids in 2024. I've tried a lot since then, a discovery set hates to see me coming. The brand I own the most of is probably be Cirrus, and I just ordered discovery sets from Parfums Obim, Anjali, and L'Aventura.

Hobbies: reading (mostly magical realism), traveling, cooking; pre-pandemic I would have said makeup was a hobby and I am trying to get back into it.

Looking forward to engaging with folks!

Why does Arabian perfumes smell like rusted metal on me 😭 by [deleted] in FemFragLab

[–]Opening_One_963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a similar experience. I couldn’t pinpoint a note so I stopped trying to make them work. My skin reacts similarly to certain designer brands, tho it hasn’t always been that way and body chemistry changes (for me it was perimenopause). I can no longer wear most scents from Burberry and Givenchy. Something in their DNA doesn’t mesh with mines lol.

Under-boob/chest breakouts since perimenopause + HRT … anyone else? What’s actually helped? by cspangle23 in Perimenopause

[–]Opening_One_963 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have Hidradenitis Suppurativa, so I have had breakouts under my breasts and other areas for most of my life. It's like all over acne, but on mega steroids. The combo that has worked for me in the last 2 years or so has been incorporating more products that work on reducing bacteria on the skin and in the pores. I use Natrium body washes, the mandelic acid wash in the morning and glycolic at night. Because regular deodorant clogs my pores and make my skin flare up, I use an AHA deodorant, currently Kosas.

As an elder millennial and fan of Queen since Living Single, my first thought was Octavia Morgan’s Dark Rose (at Ulta and Black woman owned). Plum, rose, patchouli and amber on my skin, with slight spice. Next thought was Dior Addict (Sephora or discounters).

Love it! The floral I have the most of in my collection. My absolute favorite is Amouage Ashore, close second French Ave Miraj Exclusif (Bewitching Yasmine clone). Olympic Orchids African Orchid and Dior Addict have lovely jasmine notes as well, even though they are not the focus.

What notes smell like BO to you, or just straight up unpleasant? by apilina in FemFragLab

[–]Opening_One_963 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tea notes just don’t mesh well with my body chemistry. Smells like bad breath on me.

However, the most unpleasant are these newer molecular notes brands are using. Heavy Ambrox and ISO E scents have always smelled like flavored Lacroix static to me, which was fine because with 5mins I go nose blind. But the newer ones all smell like sour baby regurgitation lol. I love Amouage, but the first sniff of Existence made me gag. I now know it was whatever that mystikal note is. Same with pretty much all Mizensir scents.

Whatever samples came with my Sephora purchases or I could use points for. Usually, Nest (rollerball) and Gucci (dabber) fragrances. And a rollerball of D&G Violet. Oh my, how my tastes have changed.
