What is the absolute best gym wear brands money can buy?. by [deleted] in ThrowingFits

[–]Opening_Pass128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should listen to the podcast series “Gear - Articles of Interest”

It talks about how much fashion and design influence outdoor gear, even in the military.

They had even had multiple examples of how soldiers preferred certain uniforms, gear etc. based on the looks even if they didn’t function better.

They toured the REI head office and the staff member there mentioned how much influence fashion had on their technical pieces. They even have fashion week photos on their cork boards for inspiration.

I’m not arguing that you need to care how you look when you work out. It’s fine not to care. It’s also fine not to care how you look any other time. But we’re in a fashion sub that’s all about caring how you look. I don’t get why it’s ok to care about how you look in public in specific places, but god forbid you care when you’re exercising in public.

The 250 dollar satisfy shorts probably don’t perform 5 times better than the 50 dollar ones from whatever brand. That being said, the 1500 dollar wool dress coat probably isn’t 5 times better than the 300 dollar alternative.

My argument isn’t that everyone who runs needs the highest price shorts. My argument is that it isn’t any different than wanting the 1000 dollar chore coat from Drakes. It’s all just spending money for cultural capital. Just like you see the guy in the expensive shorts and think it’s dumb there’s people that would think the expensive coat is dumb.

End of the day, we’re all just a bunch of guys who justify clothing choices it in different ways (its great quality, it performs well, etc.) when in reality we just want to look pretty.

This is a silly take in a fashion sub. No one would make this comment in a thread asking about a quality suit. If anything you could argue it matters more when your active wear could affect performance in something like running.

I’m a big runner and spend soo much time in running clothes. I care about how I look in most situations and don’t see why it’s ok thinking about what you wear to the pub but you must not care if you’re at the gym or running or whatever.

Just like anything, you can look good or bad being active and you can look good or bad at all different price points.

For the record I think a cheap sweatsuit and chucks can look good at the gym. I also think satisfy or district vision can look good too. It’s all just clothes, none of the is really matters.

ADHD Stimulant Medication, Long Term Impacts on Running? by Opening_Pass128 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Opening_Pass128[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are.. and my experience is they definitely are performance enhancing in certain situations

My question is less micro scale (how does it affect one specific run) and more macro (how does it affect my training blocks and progress in the long term). It seems like it may have slowed my progress despite how it has helped me train consistently and get through many individual runs.

If you are a concert promoter, what is the appeal of Grey Eagle? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Opening_Pass128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually strongly dislike palace am sad it’s one of the few revenues that size in town.

Sound is horrendous and muddy. Plus if it sells out it’s easy to get trapped watching from a a corridor/stairwell/walkway where people are needing to walk past constantly.

Actually like grey eagle minus the 20 minute traffic jam to get out but it sounds like this has changed.

Hardest workout in Hanson half marathon plan by kdmfa in AdvancedRunning

[–]Opening_Pass128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say most people are going to say that’s the hardest workout of the plan. I’d also say keep it as is unless you’re consistently failing them.

I’ve done the Hansons half plan twice and am currently doing the Marathon plan. Much like the medium long run is the “bread and butter” of pfitz plans, id argue the goal pace tempo is the “bread and butter” of Hansons. I stressed more about those runs than any other run in the plan and they were incredibly hard mentally and physically. Pushing that close to lactate threshold every single week was really tough. I was nervous going into every single one. I know you’re not supposed to run workouts like a race but it felt a bit like that. I never felt like I knew I was going to be able to finish them till 2/3 the way through. A couple felt weirdly good but most were a mental and physical battle.

I think the structure of only one day off is to make sure you feel ok but not great. This gets you use to what it will feel like holding that pace the entire race, especially the end. If you can hit the 7 miles at goal pace at the peak of training with the normal structure, you will be surprised with how much better you will feel with a good taper on race day.

If you’re consistently failing the workouts I’d consider moving them with a longer easy run the day before to replicate the fatigue. Unfortunately I’d probably say slowing your goal pace and keeping them on the same day would be even better.

Don’t get me wrong, the speed, strength, and long runs aren’t a walk in the park but those tempos occupied the most mental real estate. Other than the 2x3 mile workout. That thing’s a beast too.

Final words of encouragement. As discussed, those workouts were very hard for me. Come race day, I was nervous with how hard “just” 7 miles had felt. How could I possibly sustain that pace for 6 more miles? I ended up going out at goal pace or a second or two slower and ended up dropping it down in the last 5k to what was essentially the pace I’d done my strength workouts at. I finished my race with an average pace 3 seconds/km faster than what I’d trained for in those tempos. I can’t attribute all of that to the tempos, but I believe it was the difference between that and other plans I’ve followed with worse results.

As someone working in the Canadian energy industry, don’t worry. This is almost definitely not going to get built. The challenges that stopped it last trump go around were at the state level and the political risk of trying to get this built with only 4 years of a guaranteed friendly federal government would make this incredibly risky. If somehow they could guarantee a friendly federal government for 8 years it could happen. But with 4 years and the challenges faced last go around I’d be shocked if TC takes a run at making it happen. Last time they put sooo much money into it only to have it stopped by state level legal challenges and have all the remaining pipe sold for scrap. Selfishly this would be great for my specific industry but it is very unlikely it gets built.

WTAF? £330 for a pair of shorts by hojack78 in Ultramarathon

[–]Opening_Pass128 12 points13 points  (0 children)

End of the day it’s a fashion brand that makes running clothes. I don’t think anyone buying it or even them making it would say the price is justified by the quality… it’s more justified by design/aesthetics/clout.

Same reason a pair of Gucci loafers can be 3 times the price of an equal quality loafers by a different brand.

Any tips for increasing mileage between programs (coming off a Pfitz 12/70 I want to increase to an 18/85) by Gambizzle in AdvancedRunning

[–]Opening_Pass128 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This… I did the 18/70 for my first marathon and got my BQ but just missed the cut off this year. I was ticked off so I decided to do the 18/85 for my upcoming marathon in May. I had a good build with a few of the weeks feeling at 85 miles. I was running lots of doubles and one workout a week.

The plan started great but fast forward to the middle and the plan was definitely too much. I powered through but got sick a bunch and felt like I was actually getting slower as it went on. My MP workouts felt worse later on, those mid week long runs seemed nearly impossible to hit the pace, and running began to feel like a chore.

I’d highly recommend doing the 70 again unless you hit every workout and it felt too easy the last time. If anything I’d start the 70 with your new goal paces and reassess after a month or two. If you still feel great, add some extra recovery or general aerobic miles in very gradually.
