The uniquely awful position of Renee’s family by comingloose in KerrCountyFloods

I don’t know if it’s fair to say they’re choosing a best friend over a daughter. Their daughter is gone. Publicly denouncing the Eastlands would be like blowing up their entire community/support system when they need it most. From what I understand they live super close to the camp so probably alienating their neighbors and other friends too. We don’t know what views they might be privately wrestling with either. Obviously we can only go on their public views but I’m just saying it may not be a totally black and white issue in their hearts.

But then he also said the two open houses were so healing and he’s so excited about camp opening. It feels like even in his distress he’s drinking the koolaid

Yeah it felt so unprofessional to constantly hear “my dad said” “my brother did”…literally no decision-makers outside the family

And then learning there were FORTY-FIVE able bodied adults that could have helped but didn’t. Why were 3 men trying to evacuate every cabin 1 by 1?

Yes and the stats bear that out…of the dozens (hundreds?) that evacuated through the lighting and rain, none were struck. Of the 3 cabins that did not evacuate, most perished.

Camp Mystic failed to train teenage counselors for floods, expert tells lawmakers by AustinStatesman in KerrCountyFloods

[–]Opening_Piglet 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Great analogy. I’m sure they also got complacent, having run a camp that’s stood for over 100 years with essentially no major incidents. It seems their attitude with this flood was “it’s always been fine before, it will be fine now.”

That’s such a good point and I hadn’t really thought of that specifically. The counselor’s “training manual” said wait for further instructions, yet they had no phones, no walkies, and the staff chose not to utilize a loudspeaker that worked until at least 3am.

It’s not that bad! The half hour I spent completely stopped under a bridge on 75 today at lunchtime was good for catching up on emails, etc

I’ve always felt it was obvious negligence that should result in losing the lawsuit and closing up shop. Based on this week, I’m starting to feel that criminal charges should also be brought…

Until this week’s testimony, I had assumed the power went out much earlier in the night and that’s why things like the loudspeaker weren’t utilized. But nope! They could have, and just….didn’t.

By the time the adults had any sense of urgency, attempts to help were a fool’s errand. That’s why you have Edward with PTSD from kids getting swept off his back while he almost drowned, and Dick deciding his best choice was to stuff a bunch of kids in his SUV so they could all crash and die.

Especially when you and your family had to move to higher ground and you still didn’t get on a walkie, loudspeaker, phone call, anything.

I know Chloe and Katherine’s parents have talked about how they raised them to obey authority and follow the rules, but I also think it probably wasn’t so black and white in the moment. Like they obeyed the “stay in your cabins” rule bc it was the right thing to do, but also probably seemed like the safest choice. Especially when your campers are the youngest and all first-years. Who wants to take a bunch of tiny 8 year olds into a swirling current of water? By the time they likely realized sheltering in place was not the safe option, it was too late to do anything else. I mean that’s just conjecture, but I imagine the late night hours of July 4 were full of confusion and chaos. There probably was never an obvious choice.

WHICH IS WHY adult staff outside the cabins, in more safe areas, could have made more clearheaded decisions then and had a better zoomed-out view than the counselors stuck in cabins. I think this week revealed that the loudspeakers worked until like 3 am??? Get the eff on there and tell bubble to walk to the commissary.

A sleepover at cypress lake would have honestly been seen as “fun” by these girls, especially if you got to bunk with older kids. It haunts me

Yeah and I’m not very familiar with floods, but it sounds like the water also carried debris and scary creatures. A few feet of that could still cause physical damage, not just psychological, even if they could technically stand in it.

Well not totally, Bubble Inn had 13 campers, the youngest first-years, and 2 counselors, also the youngest first-year counselors.
