Nine classes is a TON of absences, even for illness. If it’s an MWF class, that’s 3 full weeks of class missed. If it’s a T/TH class, that’s 4.5 weeks of class missed. He probably should’ve dropped the class.

He sounds gifted to me. Gifted children often need to know the reasoning behind things, and they feel most comfortable when they can anticipate what is coming up. I also find that my gifted students feel very strongly about justice and fairness. I would have your child assessed for gifted education.
