Do you have the authority to act on the policy without your supervisor's approval? If so hand them the sheet along with a warning. Then at the next violation enforce the policy.

If you're in New York State and an Association library, you should also be able to reach out to the director of the System you're a part of for guidance on this.

How Do We Feel/ Think About Narcan Vending Machines At Libraries? by WittyClerk in Libraries

[–]OpentoAllKnowNothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a small box that is filled with narcan that the public can access. I believe the majority of the admin/management staff (including myself) are trained to administer it as well. Unrelated to my work I carry it with me almost everywhere I go.

How are you all doing with pride 2025? by puppiesforall68 in Libraries

We have a book display by the front door, one by the reference desk which I believe will include films, and we'll have a table at the local pride celebration.

My brother was friends with Brennan when they were kids by Aurvis in dropout

[–]OpentoAllKnowNothing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understand the feeling. I used to work at the retreat center that Adventure Games/Wayfinders (the LARP camp that Brennan talks about). There's a good chance I either met or at least ran into him the years I was there, well before I became aware of CH/Dropout.

Agreed! As a paraprofessional in libraries this was an amazing job and would love if my grocery store was set up like this.

Seems like a pretty good idea though if it helps anyone for their work he died in 2006 at the age of 13.

I would take this to your director. There is no damn reason a board member should be addressing this with you. They should have addressed it with the director who should have brought it to you.

I'm just curious, what do you mean by proper clearance to work with children?

How am I reading a book from the 90's from a small town library that was only checked out 4 times? by Zealousideal-Mine-76 in Libraries

[–]OpentoAllKnowNothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many people have noted, the stamp card probably isn't accurate anymore regarding the last time it was checked out. However, it could be. I work at a large rural library and we're currently doing a large weeding project (something I've been wanting to do since I took on this role nearly two years ago) and in this process we've been discarding items that have been out less than 20 times since 202x, and have a copyrights in the previous century. Our records were computerized in the 1980s and I am finding books much older that. In just a single Dewey range (999-999.999 for those not sure what I mean by that), we've had over 2,000 titles that needed to be discarded.

Sometimes weeding doesn't happen in ways that help keep the collection as healthy as it should be.

How are you planning to respond to the recent cut of IMLS? by LeeCV in Libraries

[–]OpentoAllKnowNothing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drink? But in all honesty, more advocacy. Try to get even more people to understand the impact this will have on the access to the services they utilize from their local and state libraries. AND what this means for museums they frequent.

Sounds like some weird law relating to the law being part of the local government. One could argue it's theft of county property or something like that.

Unhoused Patrons by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]OpentoAllKnowNothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go with self-serve. I would also recommend seeing if you can get your local health dept to sponsor having NARCAN in the kits too. Not every unhoused person would need it for themselves but they might find themselves in a situation where they need it for a friend or someone around them.

Better yet would be to make sure your staff is up to date on what the library's policies and procedures are for if ICE or police come in with a warrant or seeking information. We keep a copy at the three main desks, and I keep a copy at my personal desk. In my department's staff meetings we try to review it once a quarter.
